The Altar of My Fate

In The Altar of My Fate, by Michael R. Schultheiss, we follow a warrior named Rosteval and a slave-girl named Ghaitta. Through a fascinating series of events, the two find themselves connected via the altar of an ancient Shaper race. The pair grows both in character and in their relationship with destiny while Cat-Eye Pon proves to be instrumental in their journey. Their destiny is to defeat an ancient god named Haldua. Author, Michael R. Schultheiss, has given readers a novel that is an epic narrative describing an incredibly vast world and steeped in exceptional character development.

While the novel contains many positives that every fantasy reader will enjoy, if you are not used to the typical stages of a fantasy, the structure of Schultheiss’s novel can take some getting used to. The plot can, at times, appear to be a sort of fetch quest–moving the characters from one location to another to retrieve a single bit of knowledge or an item. While this is a standard plot device for works of fantasy, the novel can drag slightly because of this technique.

Schultheiss attempts to break up some of the longer stretches of narrative with detailed backstories and interesting dialogue, but the novel seems more heavily focused on the fetch quest aspects of the plot. As I read, I noted that the plot slows at times and then picks up speed. I was, however, able  to gain a better understanding of this hyper-detailed world. Schultheiss has managed to create various styles of characters–all fascinating in their own ways. Readers will enjoy the journey as the plot builds toward meeting the antagonist. This journey is one well-earned–not cliched as some works in the fantasy genre tend to be.

Overall, Schultheiss’s novel is an excellent addition to the fantasy genre. The characters are well-written, trope-subverting, and the stakes in the story are believable. It is quite a long read but enjoyable the entire way through–only seeming to slow in a few spots. I recommend Schultheiss’s work to any fan of the epic fantasy genre who are looking to explore a new author who is adept at character development and intensely focused on a detailed plot from start to finish.

A World of Magic and Mysticism

J.V. Hilliard Author Interview

The Last Keeper follows a young magician with the power of prophetic sight as he tries to stop the destruction of his world. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

I have varied inspirations for the story, but the vast majority of the worldbuilding and plot lines were a result of twenty years of playing Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop role playing games.

During the planning process for the series, I was able to memorialize several of my unique campaigns and many of our characters, villains and “cryptids” and wove them into the greater story of The Last Keeper. I took inspiration from those adventures with friends and family and used it as the basis for the story. Thus, I had a built-in and battle tested geography, political system, pantheon of gods (that I refer to as “Ancients”) as well as backstories for each.

The exercise made for a ready-made world that I just needed to launch with book one.

Daemus Alaric has many challenges to overcome as a result of his prophetic sight. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

The storyline of Daemus came to me in part by a set of recurring nightmares I had as a late teen, and I used some of the imagery to create the conflict between Daemus and the novel’s villain, Graytorris. In my dreams, I was visited by a similar entity to Graytorris that claimed to be a “guardian angel” of mine and was here to reward me if I followed his requests.

When I took that true-to-life experience and flung it into a world of magic and mysticism, it was easy to supercharge it into the metaphysical battle between protagonist and antagonist. I even used some “scenes” from my own nightmares, like the scene in the prologue near the placid pool shrouded in fog as the basis for Daemus and his first contact with Graytorris the Mad, in their shared dreamscape.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

The book is a classic sword and sorcery novel, steeped in the spirit of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and Dungeons and Dragons. At its heart, it highlights themes such as betrayal, struggle and duty. Betrayal in the form of a staged coup to topple the rightful king of Thronehelm; struggle in the form of a burgeoning war, but also struggles against Graytorris the Mad and his plot for revenge; and duty, in the form of service to kingdom as well as forbidden love between two main characters, Princess Addilyn Elspeth and Sir Ritter of Valkeener (racial tension).

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

Book two, known as Vorodin’s Lair, is in editing now and will be available in late summer while the third book, The Trillias Gambit is nearly done and will enter the editing process later this year. I expect it’s release around the holidays of 2022 or early 2023.

Simple Pleasures are the Most Rewarding

Pasquale Di Falco Author Interview

Duskborn Radiance: A Mother’s Question follows three young people that develop magical powers that their people thought were long gone. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

To answer your question, I have to start by asking one of my own. From where does inspiration come?

Here’s the thing. Duskborn Radiance is not the product of conscious choices. The story simply came to me. Better yet, the story simply came through me. More often than not, the book wrote itself. There were long stretches when my mind was quiet while my fingers hammered away of their own accord. I felt as if I was the co-pilot in my own body. In those moments, my intuition told me that I was in the grip of something far greater than myself, and my only thoughts were visual ones: scenes of what I was writing, while I was writing it, all coming through the characters’ eyes. The physical sensations were new to me, and they were profound; there was lightning in my blood, my third eye was wide open, I felt at one and at peace with the entire Universe, and the spiritual love that the ancient Greeks called agape coursed through every fiber of my being. On some level, I was aware of what was happening to me, yet the awareness was something apart from myself, like the waking version of a lucid dream. At times, it was . . . maybe not scary, but definitely unsettling. I wish that I could describe it better, but the truth is that these experiences defy language and the rational mind, as they live in and come from the heart, not the brain. The entire ordeal was both incredibly humbling and absolutely divine.

I understand that, to some, all this sounds pompous or self-important, and to others, it sounds delusional. I’ve shared these experiences with people who are close to me, and I’ve heard all the doubt and disbelief that there is to hear. I’m not trying to convince anyone, nor do I feel the need to defend myself against skepticism. When you’ve been through something like that, your priorities and your perspective change on a fundamental level, to the point that trying to convince the skeptics feels not only unimportant but also counter-productive, like you’re cheapening or betraying the experiences by defending them. I simply speak my truth, and people can take it however they want to take it.

Now, having said all that, I can still offer a more direct answer to your question. Duskborn Radiance purports to be a fantasy series, yet underneath the story’s surface, it’s all about us and our world. Some truths are best shared through fiction. Human beings are capable of real, awesome magic, and we have the ability to thwart evil. Over the past two centuries, we’ve drifted away from our inner power, yet it’s still there, and it’s impossible to destroy. Indeed, if you turn off the news, filter out all the noise on social media, and look past partisan politics, you can see that humanity is in the midst of a great reawakening. It’s messy and uncomfortable, and we’re still in the earliest stages, but it’s happening nonetheless, and it’s inevitable. Not even World War III can stop it.

So Dominic, Caterina, and Amadeus coming into their magic—their people’s first sorcerers in centuries—is emblematic of the human reawakening that’s happening here and now. It also symbolizes the simple fact that there is no hero coming to save us. We have to save ourselves, to be our own heroes, and the way to do so is by reconnecting with our inner power. But again, I didn’t choose to write any of this. I simply sat down and wrote, with the plot, characters, symbols, and themes coming of their own volition. Only after the fact, when the book was finished, did I interpret and understand it all.

Dominic, Caterina, and Amadeus start off as simple farmers and realize they have a higher purpose in life. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Well, I disagree with the choice of the word “higher.” Say rather that they have a different purpose and leave it at that. One theme in the book is that, in the end, the simple pleasures are the most rewarding ones, and the simple life serves great purpose. Indeed, to answer your question, this very theme is one of the ideals behind the characters’ development. As Dominic, Caterina, and Amadeus are thrust further and further into the overarching conflict, we see that their humble beginnings and the lessons learned during their formative years are so often what give them the strength, courage, and perspective to overcome the many challenges that await them.

Beyond that, I hesitate to say more. Duskborn Radiance is character-driven, so saying too much about character development risks spoiling the series, at least in part.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

So we’ve already discussed some, but there are more. One fundamental theme is about the nature of good and evil, and the related yet distinct concept of light and dark. Though this is a common theme in literature, I think that Duskborn Radiance offers a lot of new insight. In particular, these books expose the moral relativism of today for what it is: pseudo-intellectual nonsense. Today’s pop-culture moral relativism is a knee-jerk reaction to religion by contemporary atheists and agnostics. Of course there is an objective basis for distinguishing good and evil. Furthermore, the root of evil is not at all difficult to understand. Evil comes from the biological, psychological, and spiritual shortcomings that we call sociopathy and psychopathy.

Sociopaths and psychopaths rule the world. Why? Because they’re equipped for domination. Their hallmark lack of empathy, coupled with their invariably oversized egos, enables them to do things that good men and women cannot even conceive of doing. This, in turn, enables the sociopaths and psychopaths to hide in plain sight; when people can’t conceive of doing something, they have a hard time believing that anyone would do it. Over time, as these evil-doers continue to shape societies in their own image, our systems and our cultures reward sociopathy and psychopathy more and more. In other words, there is a cumulative effect, especially in law and politics.

Note too that these people don’t consider themselves to be evil. Every single villain is the hero of his or her own story—every single villain thinks that he or she is good—yet this doesn’t mean that they’re objectively good.

Thank you for allowing me that rant. There are other themes that Duskborn Radiance explores, though I prefer not to divulge too much more here, lest your readers tire of me, or I inadvertently spoil something. Instead, here’s a short list of my favorite themes in the books: synchronicity and divine orchestration, which is synchronicity writ large; universal oneness, or the energetic interconnectedness of all things; fundamental, immutable truth and the ways in which it manifests; divinity’s alchemical transmutation into physical energy through human power, wisdom, and love; and the role of consciousness in our Universe.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I appreciate this question. For a while, I wasn’t certain whether I would ever finish the Duskborn Radiance series. I love it in every way, and the characters are as real to me as my flesh-and-blood friends and family are. I’m grateful beyond words for the opportunity to be the story’s vessel. All the same, writing it takes a huge emotional toll, and it’s a major time commitment too. Worse, like every other author, I had periods of doubt.

Now, I feel like I have no choice but to finish the series. The response to A Mother’s Question has been so amazing—from the reviewers, yes, but first and foremost from the readers. The way I see it, if people are kind and good enough to read your work, then you owe them an ending. Furthermore, I owe the characters an ending too, and I owe it to myself to see this journey through to the finale. So next up is Volume II, Rising from Ashes. I hope to publish it in 2023, though I may need longer, as I prefer to let my writing flow organically.

As the forces of tyranny run rampant, the Universe needs a hero, and a mysterious sorceress is almost ready to answer the call. But first, she needs answers to her oldest questions. Without them, she cannot hope to prevail. Strange, then, that with so much on her shoulders, she takes such keen interest in three ordinary teenagers.

Dominic, Caterina, and Amadeus live a simple life in a little village. All they want is to tend the gardens and fall in love, yet as they grow older, they begin to notice peculiarities in their environment. Further, they’re aware of something brewing inside themselves: an indescribable feeling in their minds, hearts, and guts. Nonetheless, their people’s power has long since faded, so the sensations that the three share, well, they simply can’t be signs of magic.

With Duskborn Radiance, author Pasquale di Falco rewrites the rulebook. Forget what you know about fantasy and sci-fi; about genre fiction, literary fiction, and the novel form; about reality and time; A Mother’s Question shows us that they are so much more. Di Falco tells an epic and symbolic tale while leading readers on a journey into our own selves. Read Duskborn Radiance, and discover your own magic.

A Person Can Choose to be Good or Bad

Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait Author Interview

Stone Dragons Kingdom follows a city of people that are dragon riders as they try and protect their city and world from destruction. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

The inspiration for this story was to create a situation where a villain can have a change of heart. It shows, I think in a dramatic way, how allowing other people to help you can lead down a wrong path, as indicated by the Stone Dragons Kingdom, but also on a human level, we have Belinda who focuses on all she doesn’t have, rather than what she does have. If she could only reach that light inside her, what would change?

Learning she has strong and deep powers changes Belinda. What were some driving ideals behind Belinda’s character’s development?

Belinda is a very interesting character. She stems from a person consumed with being the best, but when she isn’t, she’ll go to the extreme to show that she is the best. In her development, I wanted to show, no matter what, a person has a choice of what they want to be, either for bad or good. With Belinda, I chose to show that she was only one choice away from changing her life.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Yes, but as always, they only come to light after I’ve written a story. I think the main theme of this one is redemption. The story starts out harshly for Belinda, even though others believed her to have changed, it took her a long time before she could shake her demons to find the person she wanted so much to become.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

Thank you for asking! Well, The Stone Dragons Kingdom was supposed to be the last for this series, but… one of my characters had something else in mind! I’m currently writing The Spires of Dasny: 5 ~ The Northern Kingdom. It’s on pre-order now and will be released by Fall 2022.

It may not be the last of the series, either ~ the same character has been given knowledge of how their current kingdom will undergo change, and he’ll be instrumental to this change.

It’s only after Seyra hears from the Truth Speaker, that she learns the truth behind Belinda. What she learns could not only destroy the Spires, but every other kingdom in their world. Belinda holds a magic so powerful, so destructive, there may be no way of stopping her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Belinda
Returning to Sezalor’s lair, I pause to connect to the Rocks. Splaying my hand open, I lay my palm flat against the wall immediately feeling the surge of power enter me.
“Time is short. As promised, you will have your own kingdom as long as you carry the Rock and Water energy for us to expand. We have been locked in one place for too long. Agola grew old and set in his ways, this is why you have this opportunity to expand with us. Use the energy we absorbed by the stone-encased Xi to bring our Stone dragons under control.”
A blinding flash cracks through the wall. I feel like I’m hit by lightning, my head screams in pain with an ache like it’s being crushed by an enormous hand. Behind me, the roar of Sezalor adds to the unbearable pain. Clasping both hands over my head, I beg for it to stop. Anything, please take this pain from me! Briefly, I smell burning. In my horror I look down to find myself being burnt alive before I’m hit by a wall of Water. Darkness.
Rebirth. I suck in First Breath. Expelled from the womb of Rock and Water, I stand on shaky legs and return to my chamber to dry. As my hands move the drying cloth over my body, I discover more scales covering me from my shoulders to the biceps. I grin. Large, stone scales. Who needs armor when I have these?
The Impossible Girl
Ava Marie Jones doesn’t know anything about her past. That is until she falls through a tree. Ava finds herself in a whole new world with creatures from all types of fairytales. She soon realizes that she belongs here. She fits in! Or so she thought. She is soon dubbed The Impossible Girl because she was never registered at birth. Author Ashley White has us follow Ava as she navigates through this new realm and school. Will she learn more about her family? Will she test the limits of her powers?
The Impossible Girl will have readers enchanted! It has a feel to it similar to books by J.K. Rowling and Rick Riordan. The story pulls readers in from the very beginning and keeps them engaged throughout the whole novel.
This magical novel starts with a long prologue, readers will find this information imperative as they start reading chapter one. The story has a great flow to it, combining action and dialogue seamlessly. The author has a way with descriptive language. The details that went into her world building will have readers envisioning the city under the tree as clearly as if they were walking there themselves.
Ava’s character is well thought out. She is taking everything she learns in stride. Ashley White has given her a strong and distinct personality that readers will be able to relate to. Ava is shy, but she is starting to come out of her shell. Her friend Duncan is an interesting character. He seems very nice and caring. However, he is a pleaser. Duncan wants to please and impress his father. He follows the rules. Can he be trusted in the future? We shall see. Ava’s friend Tara seems to be an open book and is filled with all kinds of useful knowledge. She is also a very caring friend. Always aware of her friend’s feelings. Colin is another friend of Ava’s. He is shy in the beginning but is very brave by the end. I look forward to seeing his character progress in future novels.
The Impossible Girl is a children’s and teen fantasy novel that will take readers on an adventure as a young girl discovers her true identity. With magic and mystery readers of all ages will want to follow along as Ava discovers what makes her unique.
Author Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait (C.R.C.) returns with her captivating tale of dragons, humans, and magic in this fourth book in the Spires of Dasny series, Stone Dragons Kingdom. With just enough backstory and new challenges, you don’t have to worry about not having enough context to understand what’s going on. The book starts with a bang. There’s a high-tension and high-stakes scenario threatening to unravel right from the get-go. But Cowperthwait is also proficient in building anticipation as she thrusts readers right into the thick of things. She knows how to set the stage and slowly dial up the tension in anticipation for what happens next.
Cowperthwait also shows impressive control over her story as she swings from one story gap to the next but keeps things cohesive and engaging. The storytelling is also compelling as Cowperthwait expertly humanizes her characters, thus making them relatable and memorable. With a simple yet beautiful and expressive writing style, the Stone Dragons Kingdom makes for a breezy and entertaining read from start to finish.
The Spires of Dasny: 4 Stone Dragons Kingdom is a riveting young adult fantasy novel. With plenty of action and thrilling suspense, readers will be drawn into the battles and feel connected to the characters while following their saga.
The Intra-Earth Chronicles
Author Interview
Kara Jacobson Author Interview
The Two Sisters follows two sisters who are torn apart and embark on a perilous quest to reunite. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?
The idea of civilizations existing within the earth has always fascinated me, especially after an experience in my early 20s, when I skeptically joined a bus tour departing from Las Vegas. The bus tour took us to a park outside of Reno, NV, where there were intricate stone circles, like magnificent wheels, atop of the ground. Under these stone circles they believed that the inner earth beings were close to the surface. It’s hard to describe, but something changed in me that day, and I really felt that inner earth beings could be real!
In writing The Intra-Earth Chronicles, I set out with the intention of writing a fun fantasy adventure story for kids that takes place in these civilizations within the earth. Though it may sound ridiculous, (though probably not as far-out as the idea of advanced civilizations existing within the earth 😊) that’s as far as the preliminary setup went for me. The rest came automatically as I sat in front of my computer with the intention to write. I only received a chapter at a time. So, I didn’t know at the onset what was going to transpire in the rest of the story. It was quite exciting to experience!
Sasha and Adrianne are fascinating and well developed characters. What were some driving ideals behind their character’s development?
I needed to create two strong, young women who were equally powerful, yet, very different. Strength can manifest in many different ways.
Pictured above is Sasha. She is the intuitive older sister (15 years old) with a red diamond-shaped birthmark on her forehead. Sasha’s diamond-shaped birthmark tingles before she receives a premonition. This picture, created by Brendan Kulp–a phenomenal illustrator, is included in black-and-white in the book.
Adrianne is the younger of the two sisters (11 years old) and is the fierce girl depicted on the cover with the tiger. She wears a brass hair clip in her crimson hair that conceals a tiny, sharp knife.
The initial inspiration for Adrianne was, actually, a real person! Adrianne was inspired by my childhood friend, Bria Gehringer. (I first realized this when I crudely attempted to draw a sketch of each character, and surprisingly, I drew my childhood friend, who I haven’t seen in 20 + years!) Bria was an only child who lived down the rural Wisconsin highway from me. She was charismatic, free-spirited, fearless, and harbored a deep connection to the animal kingdom–she had a ton of pets: dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rats, and an iguana, whom she called siblings, and I remember her dying her hair bright red at least once. She saved me from ultimate loneliness as a kid as I accompanied her on many childhood adventures.
The rest of the characters in this story have been completely conjured from my imagination, or, my subconsciousness. 😊
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Hope
A key theme in The Two Sisters is that there is always hope for a better tomorrow even though outer circumstances appear grim.
Sasha clings to the hope that Adrianne is still alive and living inside the ravine, which drives her to set off on this adventure across the desert.
Adrianne hopes that she can commandeer a nuclear machine from the intraterrestrials and revive a dying civilization on the surface.
Adventure
This is a grand adventure story that spans the inner and outer earth.
As Sasha traverses across the unforgiving desert terrain on the surface, she must withstand extreme thirst, exhaustion, sandstorms, and marauding war parties.
On Adrianne’s simultaneous quest within the earth, she too battles exhaustion as she carries the heavy machine, but also dodges attacking satellites shooting laser-blasts!
Sisterhood
The strong bond between family members is integral to the story!
The powerful bond between the two noble sisters, Sasha and Adrianne, is clear, but the boundaries of family are also stretched in the story to incorporate the greater human family.
The sisters will learn more about their heritage and true blood lineages as the series progresses; so many whom they have loved and have believed to be bound by blood, were in actuality, not.
Faith in a Higher Benevolent Power
The two sisters have faith in a Great One that aids them on their quests.
Sasha remembered her younger sister’s words as she set out on the perilous journey across the desert; the following is an excerpt from page 14.
“‘The Great One will provide.’ Adrianne’s voice echoed in her head. I sure hope so, baby sis. Sasha touched her heart in gratitude that the Great One had indeed provided shelter last night. Was her sister still alive? And living inside the ravine? Sasha held onto the hope, no matter how farfetched, as she proceeded in the direction of the rising sun.”
This is book one in The Intra-Earth Chronicles series. What can readers expect in book two?
Book Two of The Intra-Earth Chronicles, The Wayward Warrior, takes off right where the first book ended. The two noble sisters, Adrianne & Sasha, the tiger, and Satellite 151 journey through the subterranean jungle to the entrances leading above, hoping to deliver the great nuclear machine to the surface.
In the year 2444, the surface of the earth went black after the fall-out from the great nuclear machines, and then the warring clans took over. With the recovered nuclear machine, the two sisters believe that they can revive both technology and civility on the surface.
What they do not know is that the power-starved tyrant, Tartarus, remains within the intra-earth and is plotting to steal the nuclear machine and become venerated savior of the surface.
The rest of the story. . .I am in the process of discovering.
Thank you for reading!
The ground splits open and Adrianne is thrown from her horse, plummeting into the ravine. Spurned on by the hope that Adrianne lives, Sasha embarks on a journey through the desert to face the ravine that claimed her only sister. Meanwhile, deep within the earth, Adrianne is running for her life. She took something that did not belong to her.
The Last Keeper
In author J.V. Hilliard’s The Last Keeper, the realm of Warminster is thrown into tumult with a treasonous act and flight of their powerful Keeper of protection. The sudden occupation of marauding raiders feeds into the prophetic vision from one of the last Keepers with the gift of Sight, the destruction of Warminster. However, if the vision of the young Daemus Alaric can be interpreted correctly – and in time – order in the realm might be maintained. With the aid of the seer princess, Addilyn, and the field leadership of Sir Ritter Valkaneer, a talented Longmarchers captain, Warminster is poised to defend itself against the return of the traitorous Graytorris.
This wonderfully detailed medieval fantasy tale is filled with dramatic action and adventure. The characters are well developed and easy for the reader to connect with. The story’s pace is intense and keeps you on your toes the entire time. I was always wondering what would happen next and found this book to be unpredictable.
The element of magic introduced in the initial chapter is not explored with much depth, but it is believable and helps the story progress. Hilliard expounds on the hierarchies of race, status, and class in each of the sub-worlds that the three principal characters inhabit, adding an intriguing background to the characters in the story. There is a large cast of characters introduced, lending to the epic feel of this fantasy story, but I felt that they were hard to keep track of at times, even though each character does play an important role in the story. It never becomes clear who will spearhead the overall defense against Graytorris’ encroaching threat to the realm, but it is patently evident that there is more to come in what is sure to be a compelling series.
The Last Keeper is a riveting epic fantasy novel. Readers will find the non-stop action and adventure as the characters all come together from their separate worlds to be invigorating. This opening book to the series will really grab the attention of readers who enjoy metaphysical fantasy.
