A Writting Journey

Author Interview
Dennis Robinson Author Interview

Lycan: Solomon’s Odyssey, Chapter 1 follows a young man with a devil-may-care attitude who finds himself placed into a position of leadership in his community. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The writing of the story itself actually went on quite a journey. This was the first book or comic that I have ever written. The original version of the script was like a sort of mix between a regular book and a comic script. I had given that out to friends and family for feedback in order to help shape the story itself. Eventually one of my friends put me in touch with an editor – Onrie Kompan, who took me under his wing and showed me how to write a comic script. He also gave me other graphic novels to read to get a better idea of how to write, such as A Contract With God by Will Eisner.

Originally the story was told from two different time periods, starting off in the future, or at least the end of the series and then jumping back and forth as a sort of “life flashing before his eyes” kind of situation. However, as Onrie and I laid out the book I decided to remove that storytelling device and focus solely on telling the story from Solomon’s point of view as it was happening. In terms of picking the setting, I had two goals. One was setting the story far enough back that I avoid any currently held ideas of the world’s first werewolf, such as King Lycaon of Greek mythology. But, I also wanted to be able to use the mythology of the world as a sort of sandbox to have this character exist in, traveling along the same path of history as our own, but told as though magic and monsters exist in hushed whispers and operating in the shadows.

This first book sets up the series so certain things need to happen in order to launch the character onto this path. I wanted to show this aloof character be forced into an unfamiliar situation, and while his intentions are pure, making hasty decisions out of desperation, lead to certain consequences that impact him and shape him for the remainder of his journey.

A lot of time was spent crafting the character traits in this novel. What was the most important factor for you to get right in your characters?

For me, the goal was to have characters that are both enjoyable to read about, but also are believable. The interactions between Solomon and his brother, or his friends, is similar to interactions I might have with my brothers or friends. I also wanted to make the reader care about these characters. I love eliciting emotions from people through my work. The interactions between characters are meant to make people feel a bit of that camaraderie or  familial spirit, and any losses are meant to  make the reader feel a similar level of sadness that Solomon feels. If I can make the audience feel a certain way throughout the books, then I feel I’ve done my job as a writer in properly entertaining them. Even if sometimes what I write might be tragic.

In fantasy novels it’s easy to get carried away with the magical powers characters have. How did you balance the use of supernatural powers?

The thing I like about werewolves, or magical creatures in general, is that they can be incredibly powerful, fear inducing, and awe inspiring, and yet they always have rules. While it does not appear in the book, werewolves, as well as many other monsters, have an aversion to silver. A werewolf, typically, can’t transform unless under the light of the full moon. And with that, the human part of the equation usually loses all control of their own body. It is almost as though it is an entirely different entity behind the wheel at that point. In the story, as Solomon is given this curse, even in a human form he is much stronger, faster, and has enhanced senses and a healing ability. Against normal unprepared humans, it’s not much of a fight. Against another supernatural creature, it is a much tougher fight. He is not completely invulnerable. For the other supernatural character in the book, he seems almost infinitely powerful in comparison to even Solomon, but one thing I always like to think about, is that there is ALWAYS a bigger fish out there. There’s always something more powerful.

Where does the story go in the next book, and where do you see it going in the future?

The next book in the series takes place immediately following the first book. It really delves into Solomon trying to deal with the aftermath of the first book, focusing on guilt and PTSD. The second book also introduces other supernatural elements such as magic and other mythological creatures. The idea with each book is that with each installment, it opens the world up a little more and a little more. The first book was the origin story, it sets everything in motion. Every book in the series after that, while still following Solomon, explores other regional mythologies, folklore, monsters, and gods. The second book delves into ancient Arabic mythology. The third book is best described as HP Lovecraft meets Gilgamesh. And so on. I have the entire series planned out all the way to the last page of the final book. Right now I am planning on a 15 book run, with 3 arcs each being 5 chapters. This will let me really play around with some fun mythology from around the world!

Savage Warrior

Savage Warrior by Denna Holm delivers an intense and captivating paranormal romance where the bonds of fate and the complexities of leadership collide. At the heart of the story is Raif, a cougar shifter struggling to lead his pack while facing constant resistance from the elders. Pressured by his grandfather to find a mate, Raif’s world is thrown into further turmoil when fate intervenes in the most unexpected way. His fated mate, Haven, arrives under extraordinary circumstances that change everything.

Haven’s situation is dire. Drugged and left for dead in the mountains of Oregon, she wakes up with no memory of how she got there and, to her horror, cannot shift into her wolf form. The last thing she recalls is leaving her homeworld, Laizahli, with her vampire partner to hunt down a rogue vampire on Earth. Now, caught in this new reality, Haven finds herself saved by a cat shifter whose presence stirs conflicting emotions within her—an attraction that ignites her desire to both claim him and sink her fangs into his neck. Though her mission to find her vampire partner and stop the rogue vampire should be her main focus, Haven’s growing connection to Raif and the challenge of proving herself to his clan add another layer of tension to an already complicated situation.

Holm masterfully crafts the character arcs of both Raif and Haven. Raif’s battle to assert his leadership while being torn between tradition and instinct showcases his internal conflict, making him a compelling protagonist. On the other hand, Haven struggles with her identity and feelings of rejection from her mate while under pressure to find her missing partner. This dual conflict of self-discovery and romantic tension keeps readers emotionally engaged. Their interactions simmer with attraction and tension, adding complexity to the push and pull between them.

The balance of romance, action, and emotional depth is a standout feature of Savage Warrior. Holm weaves external threats, like the looming danger of a rogue vampire, with the simmering passion between Raif and Haven. This creates a high-stakes environment that blends supernatural intrigue with raw emotional drama. The supporting characters further enrich the story, offering a glimpse into the complexities of pack dynamics and the challenges of interspecies relationships, making the world-building immersive and multi-layered.

For fans of paranormal romance, Savage Warrior offers a richly developed world filled with shifters, vampires, and djinns. Holmes’ strong lead characters and intricate plot make this an irresistible read for anyone who enjoys being swept away by supernatural conflicts, sizzling romance, and the fight for leadership and love.

All I See Are Dark Clouds

In M.C. Ryder’s riveting novel, All I See Are Dark Clouds, readers delve deep into Cammie’s world, a once-human now-turned-vampire grappling with a traumatic past that included her transformation against her will, horrifying tortures, and the agonizing guilt of inadvertently killing her best friend, Nadine. In an endeavor to find some semblance of peace, Cammie follows a poignant personal mantra, “What Would Nadine Do?” while juggling two jobs and aiding fellow vampires as they introduce their werewolf counterparts to human life.

A striking feature of this novel is its take on werewolves. Deviating from the typical narrative of humans grappling with a beastly transformation, here we find beasts learning the art of becoming human. This nuanced role reversal facilitates intriguing scenarios where the werewolves embark on a journey of understanding and adopting human nuances.

Ryder’s portrayal of trauma, particularly as a result of the assault, is done with sensitivity and depth, illuminating the resilience of a character like Cammie, who, despite her strength, continues to grapple with her haunting past. The interweaving of the real-life horror of the COVID pandemic into a fantastical setting is both innovative and heartrending, emphasizing the powerlessness even immortals feel in the face of such widespread human suffering. Amid the tumultuous emotions and epic battles, there are moments of tenderness, such as the supernatural beings rallying to celebrate a human’s birthday and impending childbirth.

A particularly evocative touch is how the ever-changing sky and its clouds mirror the unfolding events, seamlessly binding the book’s title to its narrative. While I enjoyed the story, I felt there was an initial ambiguity regarding Cammie’s identity that might momentarily puzzle readers. Additionally, I felt the transitions between tranquillity and high drama can be pronounced at times throughout the story.

If narratives infused with the fantastical elements reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, or The Mortal Instruments captivate you, this book is poised to be a delight. With raw depictions of trauma, innovative creature dynamics, and moments both heartwarming and heartbreaking, All I See Are Dark Clouds offers a compelling read.

The 5-Time Rejected Gamma & the Lycan King

Book Review Icon

The 5-Time Rejected Gamma and the Lycan King, written by Stina’s Pen, will have you sucked in in no time. Gamma Lucianne Freesia Paw has been rejected 5 times but ends up being bonded once more. This time to the lycan king. Lucianne wants to end the bond as quickly as possible to avoid any heartbreak, but King Xandar does not. He is hurt and confused about why she wants to end things immediately. He manages to convince her to give him a chance. Xandar does everything in his power to show her that he loves her and is afraid of losing her. Lucianne and Xandar get to know each other as the days go on during the collaboration. Lucianne being the top Gamma of her species, helps teach the wolves and lycans how to fight in both of their forms. She quickly wins the hearts of many lycans, but not all. Some are downright murderously jealous.

This novel was long but absolutely phenomenal! I loved that the story took place over the course of 4 weeks and didn’t jump timelines so much. The only time it moved forward in time was at the end, but that helped the book come to a fantastic conclusion. The plot of the story was fantastic, but that plot twist got me! I did not see that coming at all.

Pen has created excellent characters that are fully developed and interesting. At times Xandar did seem a little too possessive, but I reminded myself that he is a fictional character and the lycan king. Of course, he was going to be so possessive of Lucianne because he loved her so much and wanted to protect her and felt like a failure anytime she got hurt. Lucianne was a spectacular character. I loved that the author shows that size doesn’t matter. It is all about your actions and words that can show people who you really are. Christian was a great supporting character, and his back story with his wife, Annie, was so sweet. Greg’s character ended up surprising me in the end. He changed a lot. I would say he had the most personal growth, but I do have some suspicions about him.

I hope this will not be the last I have read about Lucianne and Xandar. The 5-Time Rejected Gamma and the Lycan King quickly became one of my favorite novels. I loved that it was so long and had so much information and details. It made me feel so many emotions. I caught myself feeling angry at the characters, as well as happy and sad. I even laughed out loud quite a few times! I hope to read more by Stina’s Pen.

Crimson Haze

Crimson Haze (The Crimson Series Book 5) by [Georgiana Fields]

Quaid is fighting quite the battle within himself. His losses have been great, and he is struggling to get back to normal. Normal for Quaid is far from the normal the rest of us experience. Quaid’s normal involves instinctively knowing who his mate is, and possessing his own wolf form. Right now, Quaid has lost both. Simone, his destined mate, is recovering from a life fraught with trauma, and Quaid is trying to find himself again among all the madness. Will his world ever be righted? Will Simone feel whole again?

Crimson Haze is the fifth book in Georgiana Fields’s Crimson series and focuses on Quaid, his inner demons, and the fight he faces to regain his true form. Following a traumatic amputation, he is unable to change into his wolf form and is plagued with visions of his former self along with a feeling of helplessness where Simone is concerned. Her tragic life up until this point is a source of sorrow for Quaid, but it also presents a dilemma. He doesn’t know how or if he can help her recover from the horrific sexual abuse she has suffered. Quaid, intent on making the world right for them both, sets out to change the course of their lives.

One of the many things that makes Fields’s writing unique and worthy of binging is the sense of family she weaves throughout her cast of characters. Her already unique Dhampir cast captures readers’ attention, but the tight-knit family is evident from cover to cover. From sibling spats to fierce protection and reverence for their elders, her characters offer a long list of relatable qualities for readers.

Throughout the Crimson series, I have been impressed with the way Fields links one book to the next. There is just enough backstory given in each new installment to start readers off on the right foot, and then the new plot is off and running. As with the other books, Fields wastes no time in bringing the action. Readers will not be disappointed with Quaid’s introduction and the events surrounding his struggle to regain everything he has lost. Action is the name of the game with Fields.

Crimson Haze deals with the sensitive issue of sexual abuse in a tasteful way and offers hope to readers. It is strange to look at a vampire fantasy as having a therapeutic effect, but I believe Fields’s plot can provide readers a place of comfort and safety as they lose themselves in Quaid and Simone’s story.

Crimson Moon

Nicole has found herself in quite the predicament. As an unwanted child left to abusive relatives herself, she doesn’t quite know what to do when she is presented with young Shelby. Shelby, missing since the night of her parents’ brutal murder, has stumbled upon Nicole. Their pairing is an odd one but at the same time destined to have occurred. Longing for her parents and her Uncle Tee, hurting, lost, and hungry, Shelby does the only thing she knows how–she eats. Her need to feed, however, is like nothing Nicole has ever experienced–Nicole herself is Shelby’s sustenance.

Crimson Moon is the third in a series by Georgiana Fields. The Dhampir are the focus of Fields’s work and provide readers with a whole new cast of characters who by far outweigh any vampire novel I have ever read. Their shapeshifting abilities and the way in which they can sense one another’s life forces makes for a truly engaging read. Shelby and her extended family are standout characters with a closeness most families would envy.

One of the most striking elements of Nicole’s character development is the way she regards Tristan’s behavior toward Shelby. Nicole is at a loss on how family could and should behave. She has never received love in any form or fashion. At the hands of what little family she has, Nicole has endured unimaginable abuse. Her attempts to start over have been thwarted, and she can’t possibly relate to the display of love she sees being shown to Shelby. After seeing her “family,” readers will deeply feel Nicole’s yearning for true affection when she observes Tristan and Shelby.

As with Fields’s first book in the series, Crimson Dreams, readers will find intense action sequences, bloodthirsty characters, and breathtaking moments. Right out of the gate, Fields grabs readers’ attention with a chaotic and heart-wrenching scene between Shelby and her parents. Readers will know what four-year-old Shelby can’t possibly understand as she makes her frantic, yet forced, escape on her own. Fields knows how to pull in readers and keep them invested from cover to cover.

Having devoured Crimson Dreams, I was eager to follow the saga and was not disappointed. Fields builds on the scene set in the first book and succeeds in keeping the momentum going. I highly recommend Fields’s books to those interested in branching out of the vampire genre. There is much to be gained by exploring the world of the Dhampir according to Georgiana Fields.

Beasts

Beasts by [Angelina Kanan]

Beasts by Angelina Kanan is a classic example of the paranormal werewolf genre. Selene Knight is an alpha struggling to find her place in the world after the tragic death of her sister. For years she has run away from her past, but she is unable to continue avoiding it when an increase in wendigo sightings forces her to pay a visit to her brother, which also means having to encounter her estranged father and the bitter memories of her childhood home. Add the stress of a burgeoning relationship with her elusive mate, and Selene has a lot on her plate.

Beasts contains elements that will please fans of werewolf romance, including a mysterious and sexy mate with a tragic past, and an abundance of conflict stemming from the politics within and between packs. While the story line is enthralling, I was left wanting more from the scenes meant to be exciting, tense, or romantic. While the old adage “show, don’t tell” could be used here to draw readers further into this imaginative world. Much of the narration is devoted to explaining the relationships between characters and how those characters feel, as well as how Selene herself feels.

The most compelling character is Selene; as a female alpha who leads a small pack and is plagued by a host of demons from her past, readers will root for Selene to succeed. Her mate also proves to be an interesting character, with the question of his identity being the first of many mysteries Selene unravels as she gets to know him. Also strong are the connections between Selene and her deceased sister, as well as her brother. These sibling relationships, filled with love and loss, are touching. The rest of the characters blend together. Brett is the “sassy male friend who loves clothes and makeup” stereotype, while the other members of Selene’s pack come to the foreground when they are important to the plot.

The strongest aspect of this book is the plot, which presents some interesting conflicts and surprising reveals. Many readers will likely enjoy the relationship between Selene and her handsome mate.
