Hiding in plain sight by Thomas LeBrun, is the action-filled true story detailing a famous executive protection specialist’s life. It takes readers through his childhood, to his approach to weightlifting and martial arts all the way to providing security for entertainers.
LeBrun writes in an engaging way and explains his job in detail, underlining the difference between himself and a bodyguard, as he is an executive protection specialist. His life is intriguing, and the narration provides provocative details, but while there are some specifics about his family that are shared with the reader, the focus remains on sharing experiences of events in his storied life rather than taking a deep emotional dive into them.
I appreciated all the references to pop culture of the time. This does an excellent job of setting the backdrop of the story, making it feel grounded and immersing readers in that time. And these cultural references also serve to focus the story, and the reader, on deeper themes such as the attack on the twin towers or Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.
I enjoyed the photos that are included in the book. It made the book feel familiar and personal, so they were deeply appreciated. I enjoyed the book and felt it was an illuminating memoir. It provides an intriguing examination of ‘toxic masculinity’ and shows how persistence and hard work pays off.
Hiding in Plain Sight is a thought-provoking memoir that takes readers through the various personal moments in Thomas Lebrun’s life. The author also includes personal items that help the reader connect with his life; like his reference letters, photos and quotes from real people. This helps the story feel authentic and I think will it appeal to most readers. I would like to end this review with the author’s quote: “Further, I explained that Executive Protection Specialists operate as low-profile chameleon. With me, I called it “hiding in plain sight”.”

Wisdom Of The Men shares your life story and wisdom gained over the years to help readers improve their lives. Why was this an important book for you to write?
When I was in high school I had the great privilege to be mentored by Frank McCourt, winner of the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for his memoir about his impoverished childhood in Ireland, “Angela‘s Ashes.“ He inspired me and many other people to want to be writers.
I’ve been writing books for years but I never felt like I wrote anything of the quality of Angela‘s Ashes, and I wanted to do that because my ambition is to win the Pulitzer Prize and follow in his footsteps.
As you will see when you read the book, wisdom of the men came organically out of my experiences in the men’s self-help movement, and the vision for the book evolved into what it is because of my experiences in life and work. I needed to write this book because I needed to create my life‘s work masterpiece, so I put everything I had into this to make it the best book I could possibly write.
What is a common obstacle you find many people face when becoming an entrepreneur?
The biggest common obstacle for people who want to be entrepreneurs or are in their journey is that they don’t want to try and fail because they don’t want to look stupid. It’s unfortunate because this obstacle holding so many people back is for the most part entirely imaginary as no one is thinking about you or anything you were doing. If you’re holding yourself back because you don’t want people to think you’re stupid or foolish or a loser, you really need to understand that no one is thinking about you at all. They’re just thinking about them self.
What is one piece of advice someone gave you that had the biggest impact on your life?
One of my great mentors, Dan Kennedy, started saying something I picked up on, “rich people work hard.“
For many years I wasn’t sure if I should allow myself to portray myself in my marketing as a hard-working person because so much of my work is about Celebrity, and I was concerned that Celebrity required a lifestyle of ease. But having asked many rich people including Martha Stewart, Ice-T, Dr Oz, and others who you will read about in the book, “do rich people work hard?“ I am very confident that self-made rich people do work hard, and this advice really allowed me to focus on working hard and use my hard work as a marketing tool and asset that has made me lots of money.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from your book?
There’s so many things that I want people to take away from the book, to narrow it down to only one thing would be doing the book a great disservice. In that spirit, to answer this question, I want people to understand the importance of “over delivering“ and I hope that this answer in its own way over delivers on your question.

I feel very lucky to have found my way onto this career path unintentionally. If I had known about it earlier in life, I think I could have been even more successful sooner – so, I wanted to get the knowledge out to others as quickly as I could. However, I didn’t know what the most important aspects were to focus on, before I started outlining the content. The more I thought about it, the more I added, and I shuffled things around until I felt like I had a pathway that would bring others along constructively. What you’ve read is the first half of the book I originally conceived. The companion “Master Plan” volume will be out by year’s end, and it gets even more specific with proprietary contract language (thanks to the illustrious Michael Terpin, my former boss) and what amounts to a blue-print to operating a successful PR consultancy. I hope a lot of people will follow your lead and use what I’ve written to build their careers to new levels, even if they are starting out from scratch.
What is a common misconception you feel people have about public relations?
There are quite a few colorful and widespread misconceptions. Many years ago at a trade show, I saw an older gentleman in a crowd, shaking everyone’s hands as fast as he could grab them and passing out his business cards like a machine. I think I still have the business card: The logo was two hands shaking, and the headline read “Mister PR.” There’s that classic “Flim-Flam Man” version, and now, you can watch PR aces working magic on TV, like those advising the Roy family on “Succession.” A lot of people don’t understand that much of the work of PR has to do with writing. There is a skill set that can be learned, especially for those willing to exercise their writing abilities and commit to ongoing learning to stay sharp. There is a lot of overlap with “Influencers,” and when a PR person is especially successful, that’s what they become.
What is a recent trend in public relations that you feel has the potential to change things?
Things are always changing. One of the things that is encouraging to me about this field is, I feel there are a lot of layers to it (and everywhere, smart practitioners helping themselves and others be more successful). My book references this article I love, from publicity expert Joan Stewart: “How to Publicize a Garden Walk and Other Local Events.” (http://ow.ly/pOhH30dHOuv) That article teaches people exactly how to use the PR skill set very productively – which is potentially life-changing for those who read it. I mentioned Influencers … they are an immense force at work in marketing communications worldwide. As you know, I am optimistic ; I have a sense of a growing population of smart communicators who are going to unite superpowers for good.
What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?
There are a few – all are addressed in your review. I’m hoping people will see a new way to work, pursue it, and own it. As those sparks fly, a new communications consultant will start shaping their own success, then another, and another. I will be celebrating each one like a proud papa.

There are more than a dozen topics that the author focused on in his book. The main topics are communications and public relations. The author writes in depth and shares experiences from his career when expounding on a topic. Whether a student, entrepreneur, or professional, author Roger Darnell ensures that you will understand his message. His style of explaining is clear and simple. He talks of complex subjects using simple words that are easily understood by the average reader. His use of layman language when explaining intricate terms is one of my favorite features in his writing.

After just a few pages into each chapter I felt like I had a good understanding of the topic. The author is erudite in all areas of communication.
