Accept Differences And Be Kind

Nan Morgan-Dew Author Interview

“Armitage and the Thunder Bean” follows a queen’s son, created for villainous tasks, challenges his fate and becomes the unexpected hero of his town in a darkly creative children’s story. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The idea for the story came to me in a dream, like most of my ideas, I think my imagination works best when it is in such a relaxed state and trying to make sense of the day. I had been bullied at school myself, and looking a little alternative to most, this sense of restriction by society and others placed upon me, as well as the strong theme of acceptance and kindness really resonated with my own experiences growing up. The idea of rebelling against the stigma society places upon you represented by the queen in the story is really relevant to my own experiences in life but also i wanted strong relatable themes that would reach out to children and adults that do have to deal with abuse, bullying and any kind of restriction or rejection. Showing them there is light at the end of the tunnel and your situation does not define your character. I also wanted to educate and raise awareness to those who may not include those who are a little different, to accept differences and be kind.

The book has a distinct and unusual aesthetic, especially in terms of color palette. Can you talk about the process and intention behind creating this unique visual tone?

I wanted the tone to be set, to complement the text, which can be slightly sinister in a very childlike way. I think a darker colour pallette suited the tone of the story. It also suited the characters and the subtext within the story. it’s almost a children’s gothic book in my mind. the purple was contrasting the browns and greys to keep the illustrations bold and appeal to children. I love German expressionism and the illustrations do have a glimmer of this art movement within them.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Acceptance of those who may look or seem unusual or a little different. Not judging a book by its cover. Some of the kindest people may look a little strange to the normal in society but that doesn’t mean anything in terms of who they are. Diversity of characters and of appearance was a big one. As well as encouraging children to be their true selves regardless of society’s standards of what is acceptable. As well as teaching kids not to prejudge others on their looks or appearance of their home life. Some children are not lucky enough to have loving homes, so if you see a child struggling, help them, be kind don’t make fun of them.

Can we expect to see more of Armitage’s adventures, and if so, what can you tell us about your plans?

Yes, Armitage is a series! I have at least another two books if not more, I’m currently illustrating the second book. You will find more ways Armitage overcomes his troubled situation and more good things start happening to the boy made out of odds and ends, this and that.

Teaching children Just because you may look a little different doesn’t mean you heart is not great. A story exemplyfying to children, the greatness of kindness, empathy, sympathy and not judging a book by its cover. A book about accepting diversity.

The Metamorphosis of Emma Murry

“The Metamorphosis of Emma Murry” elegantly portrays the tale of thirteen-year-old Emma, an aspiring artist and ardent environmentalist passionately devoted to preserving the ecological integrity of her hometown and, more specifically, its Monarch butterflies. Emma and her trusted confidante, Sophie, frequently find joy in skateboarding and stewarding the verdant greenway of Black Mountain. However, their tranquil routine is interrupted when a famous movie star aims to purchase the greenway and adjacent mountain for conversion into a ski resort, catapulting the girls into a battle to preserve their cherished environment.

Rebecca Laxton artfully intertwines the allure of small-town adventures, imbuing her narrative with a warm and inviting ambiance that is synonymous with the tranquil life of Black Mountain. The characters are intricately woven into the fabric of the town, fostering a sense of community and familiarity. The book is an invitation into a world that feels remarkably real, prompting the reader to step into its narrative sphere and be reluctant to exit. Laxton leaves a trail of breadcrumbs for potential sequels, and I can’t help but hope that she explores the possibility of further tales set in Black Mountain.

Laxton’s ability to inject her narrative with tangible elements rooted in reality offers a unique and intriguing dimension to her storytelling. She selects an actual location in North Carolina, reinforcing her story with well-documented aspects such as the Dog Man map sightings, an authentic resource readily available online. She crafts her narrative with meticulous attention to detail, incorporating interesting facets like a playful ghost in Emma’s father’s shop that develops a penchant for hiding dolls. Although these elements do not directly influence the storyline, they significantly enhance the reader’s engagement.

The prose is well-crafted, and the narrative masterfully straddles the line between heartwarming insight and palpable suspense, weaving an essential thread of environmental consciousness throughout. This book is a shining testament to Laxton’s literary prowess, making it an irresistible addition to any reading list.

Teamwork Makes The Dreamwork

Karen M. Bobos Author Interview

Love is in the Air follows three princesses and their babysitter who accidentally cast a love spell on the whole kingdom and have to reverse it before things get out of hand. What was the inspiration for your story?

There were a few inspirations.  I definitely wanted to show appreciation to the girls’ nanny, Ali, who was and is such an important part of our lives.  This is who the book is dedicated to, and of course, the inspiration for the main character, Ali the Alligator.  She was their nanny for many years.  My daughters LOVE making potions and arts and crafts.  Lastly, my daughters love LOVE, and they are always hugging people and making friends.  They have this gift of making people feel good about themselves.  It was very fitting to have their love potion spread throughout the town.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

I had fun writing the scene when the King and Queen found Ali’s husband, Karl, kissing a picture of her while her was at work because he was under the love spell.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

I really wanted this book to be light and fun and silly.  Teamwork makes the dreamwork.  When you work together to accomplish a goal, anything is possible.

Will there be more stories about Angel Scarlet, Princess Daphne, and Fairy Cora? If so, when will it be available?

Yes, The Bobcat Birthday Party is launching this August 2024.  Stay tuned!

Iggy’s Second Chance

Iggy has a wonderful home, is well taken care of, and loves his family dearly. The Eastons love their dog Iggy and would do anything for him. The promise of a hurricane and ensuing destruction is enough to bring about some very difficult decisions for the Easton family. As they prepare to leave their home for the safety of a shelter, the family is faced with the reality that they will need to leave Iggy behind in as safe a situation as possible but alone in their home. Iggy tells readers his story of survival and a new start in this wonderful children’s book.

Iggy’s Second Chance, written by Patricia Paradiso and Laura DeAngelis and illustrated by Jeffrey Mora, contains some difficult realities in the form of a first-person narrative written from a dog’s perspective. Iggy finds himself wandering the streets looking for his family following a devastating hurricane. The authors have done a wonderful job of portraying the overwhelming destruction and the struggle faced by so many pets following natural disasters.

Iggy’s search for his family takes him through the very real progression of steps any pet would experience following a natural disaster. Readers are introduced to animal rescue, veterinary intervention, and pet adoption. All of my pets are rescues, so this book’s topic is close to my heart, and Paradiso and DeAngelis have done a superb job of creating a story that will touch readers. I feel the first-person point of view is an excellent way to bring home the seriousness of Iggy’s plight.

Iggy’s Second Chance, written by Patricia Paradiso and Laura DeAngelis and illustrated by Jeffrey Mora, is a beautiful story of one of the purest and most genuine types of love–owners and their precious pets. I highly recommend Paradiso and DeAngelis’s book to both teachers and families looking to further develop empathy in their young readers.
