The Burden of Power
Posted by Literary-Titan

Avatars of Destiny: The Quest for Reality’s Edge is a genre-crossing novel with elements of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Action/Adventure. Did you start writing with this in mind, or did it happen organically as you were writing?
You know, it was quite an organic process. I started with a core idea and as I delved deeper, the story naturally branched out into these different genres. It felt like the world I was creating demanded a blend of science fiction, fantasy, and action to tell its story fully.
I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from and how did it change as you were writing?
The inspiration came from a mix of my favorite sci-fi and fantasy worlds, alongside real historical events. As I wrote, the setting evolved—initially a sketch, it soon expanded into a vibrant universe teeming with life. Every chapter seemed to breathe more detail into the world, making it feel almost alive.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Themes of self-discovery, the burden of power, and the clash between science and magic were central to the story. I wanted to explore how characters navigate their identities and responsibilities in a world that constantly challenges their beliefs and values.
When will book two be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?
Book two is in the works and should be available next year! It’s going to take readers even deeper into the conflict, exploring new territories and unveiling secrets about our protagonists’ pasts. Expect more twists, more adventures, and a deeper dive into the mystical and technological aspects of the world.

The Heiress: A 20th Century Strong Heroine Romance
Posted by Literary Titan
The Heiress, 1975: She had everything a young woman could want: beauty, brains, and a fortune to match. But beneath her perfect facade, Tiana Manning carried a secret that threatened to destroy her.
It all began in Paris in 1972 when fifteen-year-old Tiana first met Father Philippe Gagnon. Charismatic and charming, he captured her heart and left her smitten.
Three years later, when Tiana’s world falls apart, Philippe, now a bishop, reappears and supports her in her time of need. Her schoolgirl crush transforms into passionate love.
But just as quickly as he returned to her life, Philippe was gone again—first to the Vatican and then to Australia.
Determined to follow him and confess her love, a chance meeting gives Tiana the perfect cover story. She becomes involved in uncovering a terrible lie told to a former 1950s British child migrant sent to a Perth Catholic institution, giving her the excuse to fly to Australia.
But will her bishop still be there, and if so, what on earth will he say when she turns up at his door unannounced?
If you enjoyed the gripping themes of Thorn Birds, the heartwrenching story of Empty Cradles, or the powerful impact of the movie Spotlight, you won’t be able to put this book down.

Ghost Train
Posted by Literary Titan

Ghost Train by Natalie Anna Jacobsen is a spellbinding Japanese fantasy novel that feels like stepping into a vivid dream. Set in 1877 during the Meiji Restoration, it artfully blends history, folklore, and fantasy, evoking the feel of an immersive film. At its heart is Maru Hosokawa, a samurai’s daughter, who must confront the literal and figurative ghosts of her past. As trains slice through Kyoto’s ancient landscape and foreign influences permeate Japanese society, Maru’s world transforms. Her journey intertwines with spirits, yokai, and a mischievous kitsune, all of whom pull her deeper into a mystery that mirrors the shifting world around her. Jacobsen’s use of rich imagery and cultural references conjures a time when belief in the supernatural wasn’t mere myth but an everyday reality. The narrative creates a vivid world where readers can almost feel the steam from locomotives and hear the whispers of ghosts drifting in the wind.
The novel introduces us to Maru’s struggle as she encounters the haunting “ghost train,” powered by spirits resisting Japan’s relentless modernization. Torn between her family’s traditional values and the encroaching new world, Maru must confront her inner demons and accept her grief, waiting for her father to restore her life to what it once was. The themes of loss and adaptation are deeply woven into the story, making Maru’s journey as emotional as it is mysterious. Imagining this book feels like picturing a Studio Ghibli film set during the Meiji era, layered with legends, ghosts, and an atmosphere that is simultaneously cozy and haunting. It brings to life a 19th-century Kyoto where tradition and modernity collide in the most magical way. Jacobsen’s imagery is breathtaking. Every detail feels like a love letter to Japan, honoring its culture and history while capturing the tension of a society caught between the old and the new. You can almost hear the ghost train’s eerie whistle slicing through the mist and feel the weight of spirits whispering around Maru. The meticulous research is apparent throughout the book, turning every description into a celebration of Japan’s rich past and its haunting folklore. The novel feels perfect for a chilly evening, blending fantasy with the real-world issues of modernization and the impact of Westernization on traditional cultures. It’s not only a captivating fantasy but also a moving exploration of cultural transition. Admittedly, Ghost Train can be challenging to dive into initially. The frequent use of Japanese proverbs, historical references, and folklore may feel dense for those unfamiliar with the culture. Yet, this complexity adds an undeniable authenticity. It’s like being invited into a secret world, and the effort to understand it only enriches the reading experience. For fans of Japanese literature and fantasy, this book is a treasure. The prose is elegant, and the story unfolds with a graceful, almost lyrical beauty.
What truly stands out is how alive the story feels. The city of Kyoto emerges as a character in its own right, breathing and evolving in response to the events around it. The slow pacing may deter some readers, but it complements the book’s atmospheric, detail-rich storytelling. This isn’t a sprint; it’s a deliberate, immersive journey where magic lives in the nuances. For those who enjoy slow-burning fantasies with richly developed settings, Ghost Train promises a hauntingly beautiful ride through a world where the past and present dance with spirits and legends.

The Phantom of Forest Lawn: Romance and Redemption in the City of the Dead
Posted by Literary Titan

The Phantom of Forest Lawn, by Robert Brighton, is a captivating dive into post-Civil War Buffalo, New York, where the living and the dead intersect in the most intriguing ways. Set in 1867, the story revolves around the sprawling Forest Lawn Cemetery, which has become a hub of not just burials but also clandestine activities. The novel weaves together the lives of Georgia Moffatt, a woman determined to protect her family’s legacy, and Christian Schamber, whose past and present are entangled with the cemetery’s mysteries.
I especially enjoyed Brighton’s ability to bring the historical setting to life. He paints a vivid picture of Buffalo during this era, with its wooden sidewalks, horse-drawn trolleys, and rapid post-war growth. The meticulous attention to detail, like the high water table and the booming real estate demand, adds a layer of authenticity that immerses you in the period. The prologue, where a man reflects on a bittersweet memory, sets a nostalgic tone that resonates throughout the book.
The characters are well-developed and compelling. Georgia Moffatt stands out with her strong will and determination to combat the resurrection trade tarnishing her family’s name. Her interactions with Mr. Stroup, as they discuss hiring a night watchman to protect the graves, highlight her proactive nature and the social challenges of the time. On the other hand, Christian Schamber’s journey is equally engaging, especially his heartfelt conversations with Georgia about love and honor. Their evolving relationship is delicately woven into the darker themes of the story and engages the reader emotionally.
Brighton’s writing style is a blend of poetry and accessibility. There are moments of sheer beauty in his descriptions. This lyrical quality, combined with the more gritty and humorous elements, like the scene where Stroup deals with the aftermath of an explosive mishap in the cemetery, provides a narrative that is beautiful and engaging.
The Phantom of Forest Lawn is a richly detailed historical novel that will appeal to fans of historical fiction and mystery alike. Brighton’s ability to blend romance, history, and intrigue makes this a standout read.

Shrouded in Mystery

Seven Hills One Light follows two sisters whose faith places them in grave danger during the religious persecution occurring under Nero’s reign. Where did the idea for this book come from?
About eight years ago, my husband and I went on a 3-week road trip through most of Italy, and about a third of our time was spent in Rome. From the moment I got off the train, I was in love! I knew I had to write a story set in the ancient city. Then, a number of years later, we went back to Italy, this time to live there for a few months. We spent another week or so in Rome, and it was during that trip that I came across the names of two women, Tryphosa and Tryphena, who are mentioned in the bible as being early Roman converts to Christianity. But the details of their life are shrouded in mystery, so I sought to fill them in. I used a lot of what I saw in the city to influence how I wrote the novel.
What draws you to the historical fiction genre?
Ever since I was in third grade, I’ve had two major passions: writing and history, primarily ancient history. I often get lost down these rabbit holes researching [amaturely] my favorite historical eras. I primarily read historical fiction as well, so it only seemed right that my debut novel would be historical fiction.
Do you have a favorite character in your book? One that you especially enjoyed writing for?
Authors probably routinely say this, but I really enjoyed writing from Phosa’s point of view [my main character]. She has a lot of the same traits as I have. She is authentic and clearly shows her feelings. She isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said, but she also sometimes stumbles into social situations she didn’t intend to get into. And the best part of her is that she actually grapples with her extreme fear of being found out by the Roman authorities. I think too often, we are shown these stories of early church martyrs who were just 100% courageous and had no fear of death. I didn’t think that was very realistic.
What is the next book that fans can look forward to seeing from you?
So, right now, I am taking a break from the In the Shadow of Lions series and writing a super cute Christmas Romance novella. I am a huge fan of Christmas! But right after that, I will be diving right back into the thick of things and revealing what happened to Phena in book two!

Two Sisters, One Fate: A Journey of Love, Survival, and Faith in Ancient Rome
In a city where whispers of a new faith ignite both hope and peril, two orphaned sisters find their lives forever changed by love and danger. Seven Hills One Light weaves a tale of passion, resilience, and faith that readers of The Nightingale and The Book Thief will love.
In the heart of Rome, danger lurks around every corner as rumors of Christianity spread through the streets. For Tryphosa and Tryphena, life is a precarious dance of survival—they are unmarried, vulnerable, and devoted to their faith in the enigmatic teachings of Jesus. With the telltale symbol of the fish discreetly hidden behind their ears, they live in constant fear of discovery.
When a sudden upheaval shatters their fragile existence, leaving them homeless and desperate, Phosa and Phena are forced to make choices that could seal their fates. Navigating a city rife with political intrigue and threats to their very survival, the sisters grapple with profound questions about their faith. As they struggle to reclaim their lives, the unexpected arrival of two captivating men—each harboring their own secrets—turns their world upside down and tests their resolve in ways they never anticipated.
Amid the chaos, a fiery romance ignites between Phosa and Simon, a passionate young man whose magnetic presence challenges her beliefs and stirs desires she thought she could suppress. Their connection is electric, yet fraught with danger, as every stolen moment becomes a risky gamble against the backdrop of a city that seeks to destroy them. Meanwhile, Phena finds herself drawn to a charismatic Jewish moneylender whose charm promises a life of luxury and safety, but also entangles her in a web of societal expectations and moral dilemmas.
As the stakes heighten and tensions rise, the sisters must confront the ultimate question: Can their faith withstand the trials of love, or will their hearts lead them down paths of betrayal and despair?
In her enthralling debut, Hazel Dains crafts a spellbinding narrative of passion, betrayal, and courage set against the dramatic backdrop of ancient Rome. As faith and love intertwine, readers will be captivated by the sisters’ journey, experiencing every heart-pounding twist and emotional turn.
Don’t miss your chance to dive into this unforgettable tale of love and survival! Order your copy of Seven Hills One Light today and immerse yourself in a world where faith and romance collide in the most unexpected ways.

The Heartbreak of Time Travel
Posted by Literary Titan

The Heartbreak of Time Travel is a stirring and fragmented exploration of time, love, and the grit of caregiving. Wingate, through the character Snuffy Cod, navigates a memoir of a woman caring for her husband, who is slowly losing his faculties due to dementia. Each chapter peels back the layers of their relationship as she blends biting humor with raw confessions, touching on everything from the mundane rituals of caregiving to existential reflections on time, memory, and impending loss. It’s a contemplative journey that often leans into the absurd, embracing life’s messiness and fragility with a sense of irony and defiant grace.
Wingate’s writing is both immersive and jarring. She employs a conversational, almost stream-of-consciousness approach that pulls readers into Snuffy’s headspace. This approach initially feels chaotic, especially when Snuffy switches between the first and third person, but it mirrors her fractured reality and internal conflict. Her desperate wish for her husband’s peaceful passing is heartbreaking yet brimming with love. This rawness makes the book feel personal and relatable. There’s no filter, no sugarcoating, just Wingate’s unvarnished truths laid bare.
One of the most memorable aspects of the book is Wingate’s handling of time. She weaves past memories, present duties, and future dreams as if they’re interchangeable, which feels appropriate for a book centered on time travel. In one chapter, Snuffy imagines time reversing so she and her husband can relive their “first kiss,” sparking a fresh, almost whimsical hope amidst the grimness of daily routines. This blend of longing for the past and dread for the future emphasizes the book’s title; it’s the heartbreak of reliving what can never be again, despite her attempts to “zip to future” or “zip to past.”
The humor in this book is one of its strongest elements. Even in moments of frustration, Wingate finds comedic relief. This humor doesn’t detract from the emotional weight. Instead, it makes Snuffy’s pain and resilience feel even more real, grounding the narrative in the strange ways people cope.
The Heartbreak of Timetravel is a challenging yet rewarding read for anyone who’s faced caregiving, loss, or the relentless passage of time. Wingate’s unfiltered and witty approach brings authenticity to every page. I think it’s ideal for readers who appreciate memoirs that are as humorous as they are haunting, as reflective as they are raw.
