Not Nicholson: The Story of a First Daughter, an adoption search and reunion memoir
Posted by Literary Titan

In Not Nicholson, Ann M. Haralambie embarks on a soulful journey into the heart of adoption search and reunion, inviting readers to join her in navigating through its myriad emotional and practical complexities. Haralambie, an attorney specializing in children’s advocacy, presents a memoir and a nuanced exploration of identity, belonging, and the labyrinthine pathways of the legal system and the human heart.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York, Haralambie’s narrative is vividly brought to life through her descriptive prowess, immersing readers in the towns and locales pivotal to her personal exploration. Her words recount and breathe life into each place, becoming settings through which the highs and lows of her search unfold.
Haralambie’s own history as an adoptee serves as the poignant fulcrum of her story, weaving together the personal and professional strands that drive her 35-year quest for biological roots. Despite being enveloped by the love of her adoptive family, the sealed records of her adoption presented a mystery that captivated her since her youth, leading her to embark on this odyssey during her law school years.
Not Nicholson transcends a mere chronological account, intertwining a heartfelt memoir with invaluable insights into the legal aspects of adoption search and reunion. Haralambie generously shares the judicious steps that guided her journey and unabashedly reveals the missteps, providing readers with a genuine, holistic view of her expedition through legal channels and emotional landscapes.
Moreover, the book adeptly encapsulates the evolution of the adoption process since the 1950s, providing a comprehensive backdrop against Haralambie’s personal experiences. It becomes a story of personal discovery and a microcosm through which readers can observe the changing tides of social and legal perspectives on adoption.
Haralambie masterfully conveys the uniqueness and commonality inherent in adoption stories with each page. Her approach is both honest and exhaustive, evidenced by the inclusion of meticulously labeled photographs that allow readers to visually traverse her expansive family tapestry.
Amidst the oscillation between triumph and setback, joy and sorrow, Haralambie’s unyielding determination remains steadfast throughout her narrative. Her story, while uniquely hers, becomes universally inspiring, exemplifying an unwavering resolve that continues even in the face of numerous obstacles.
In this deeply moving and enlightening memoir, Ann M. Haralambie does not merely share a journey but opens a dialogue about adoption, identity, and the incredible power of unrelenting determination. Not Nicholson: The Story of a First Daughter, An Adoption Search and Reunion Memoir thus stands not only as a testament to Haralambie’s journey but also as an invaluable companion for those navigating the intricate paths of understanding and acceptance in the realms of adoption.

Emerging From the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories
Posted by Literary Titan

In Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories, by Terence Ang, the author shares inspiring stories from both stroke survivors and their caregivers. Included is his own journey. A stroke can have long-lasting and damaging effects on the body, but it is not a death sentence. There is hope for survivors, and through uplifting books like this, they will know they are not alone, and their experiences aren’t unusual.
Having a stroke is a life-altering experience. To some people, it means not being able to do the things they love anymore or not working and depending on others to do basic things for them. Anyone can suffer from a stroke, although some factors can increase the likelihood of one occurring. Surviving a stroke is something to be celebrated. Sadly, some survivors feel ashamed of their situation. Terence Ang aims to change this mindset through his own success story and those of others shared in his book.
Many of Ang’s stories in the book demonstrate incredible levels of growth. This is such an important aspect for readers looking for hope. I can relate to many of the stories shared in Ang’s book, as I’ve seen firsthand what life after a stroke is like. I commend the caregivers who ensure things go as smoothly as possible for their patients and loved ones.
For people who care for stroke patients, Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories, by Terence Ang, will enlighten them on the challenges and needs of their loved ones and give them an valuable insight into how dramatically their lives have changed. Both the moving personal stories and the striking illustrations will have readers spellbound. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to better understand life post-stroke or any family member striving to care for someone adjusting to a second chance a life.

Knowing Irv: The Life and Art of Irving Schiffer shares with readers the lesser-known areas of your father’s life and his passion for artwork, both written and with various media methods. Why was this an important book for you to write?
The year 2022 was the 50th year of his passing. I was 14 at the time. He was a writer, a painter, a photographer, and more…but, of course, he was my dad, and not a day goes by that I don’t miss him terribly. But in 2022, my brother and I wanted to put his legacy out in the public for people to learn about what a wonderful and creative soul he was. I began to gather his paintings, his stories and cartoons, had over 300 slides converted to digital, and before I knew it, there was a substantial body of work.
It was as much a personal passion project as it was about sharing his art with the world. I think that, too often, we look at art and don’t see the person behind it. Irv Schiffer expressed himself in so many ways that I felt it was the most important thing for me to show others his personality and joy through his art.
When you and your brother were creating this book and researching all of his work, did you find anything that surprised you about your father?
We started this as, not a book, but as something to do to collect our dad’s output in one place. But my brother had just turned 70, and I wanted to surprise him by completing this for his enjoyment. We were both extremely surprised at the amount of material there was. Specifically, I was surprised to learn he had a very renowned literary agent at the time and also that he had just pitched out a book exposing the private surveillance industry for the shady things that were going on at the time. I never knew about that.
Irv Schiffer was a true Renaissance man who created his art using diverse methods and media, from the written word to physical art. What is your favorite work of art that your father created and why?
He was a songwriter and lyricist too, so I think his song “Ain’t You Got a Pencil,” which could have stood shoulder to shoulder with any of the witty songs of the Great American Songbook, is my favorite of all.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from your father’s story?
To cherish authentic art from unknowns wherever you find it and to support indie artists!

Here, for the first time, is a collection of all the paintings we could find, a record of his short stories, trade magazine articles, photos, a full (unpublished) manuscript and a traditionally published book, line drawings for a detective agency newsletter, and even cartoons. While not complete (he gave away or sold some paintings that we have no record of), it is a healthy and appreciable account of a beautiful, artistic soul who was our father. These works will hopefully paint their own picture of why Knowing Irv was a cherished and once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Knowing Irv: The Life and Art of Irving Schiffer
Posted by Literary Titan

Lose yourself in the beautifully nostalgic pages of Knowing Irv: The Life and Art of Irving Schiffer, a heartwarming journey curated and penned by his daughter, Debbie Burke. This isn’t merely a book but a cozy evening spent exploring vintage photo albums and family tales of a cherished TV screenplay writer from the golden days of the ’50s and ’60s.
With a genuine passion and a poignant touch, Debbie weaves a tapestry that melds together professional milestones and intimate family moments, artfully presenting Irv’s world behind the script and the family dinner table. She brings forth not just a memoir but an intricate portrait of a man whose life was as colorful and layered as the era he lived through.
Irv wasn’t just a multifaceted artist; he was a multifaceted person. From the radios of World War II, where he served dutifully as a Radio Officer, to the bustling streets of Brooklyn, where he and his beloved Roslyn embarked on their journey as a young married couple – his life was a rich narrative that deserved its dedicated pages.
The visuals within this memoir are storytellers in their own right. Marvel at original documents and Irv’s own snapshots that don’t just validate but vivify the historical tales nestled within the chapters. Irv’s lens captured the essence of Brooklyn, revealing the artful beauty in daily mundanities and the inevitable passage of time.
We witness Irv’s artistic evolution, as his love for capturing moments extends from photography to the tender strokes of his later-life painting and pastel work, immortalizing the faces of those he held dear in vibrant color and emotion.
Knowing Irv is a walk through history and a delightful amble through the memories and moments that defined an era and a remarkable man. It invites readers of all ages to engage, reflect, and perhaps find a piece of their own history in its pages. Young minds will unearth treasures of a bygone era, while older hearts will find a nostalgic haven reminiscent of yesteryears and a quiet tribute to an undoubtedly inspirational American man.
This book preserves Irv’s legacy and brings his spirit to life, allowing every reader to know him and in doing so, to connect with a rich, collective past that shapes our present.

Instinct to Nurture Wild Animals
Posted by Literary-Titan

Mother to Elephants follows the life of Daphne Sheldrick and her journey from caring for orphaned animals to rescuing elephants and becoming a conservationist. What inspired you about her life that made you want to tell her story?
My wife and I spent many weekends on safari and could not get enough of the Kenyan wildlife – especially the elephants. I guess it was meant to be that I heard about the elephant orphanage and decided to check it out. Little did I know that my visit to the Sheldrick orphanage would start the seeds for this book project and a book launch many years later! Through the years, I participated in the adoption program, the organization, and still receive regular updates (field notes) about a particular elephant’s progress. I learned that this instinct to nurture wild animals started at a young age for Daphne through her various books and film footage. Although there is a lot of coverage and material for adults, I couldn’t find anything for kids to read, and I felt that the younger generations should also have a chance to learn about the work of this remarkable lady. In addition, the determination Daphne showed in facing some setbacks was inspirational to me. Daphne was the first to develop a formula suitable for milk dependent elephants. Sadly, before Daphne’s discovery, unfortunately many of the youngest orphaned elephants didn’t make it.
The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Kateryna Rohotova?
I was lucky to find an illustrator such as Kateryna. In my search, I was primarily looking for 2 things: An artist who is familiar with painting elephants and uses colors that suit the Savannah landscape of Africa. Kateryna’s work stood out right away to me, and when I learned that she was also a great animal lover, I knew this would be a good fit. As this was to be a biography picture book, it was important that the scenes be authentic. Kateryna researched her drawings so that even the plants and smallest creatures were native to Kenya where the story takes place. The process with Kateryna went very smoothly. She would first make a sketch based on my description of the scene, before painting in watercolor by hand, and finally scanning and retouching the scene.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
The main ideas I wanted readers to come away with is through love and determination, many things are possible. Daphne grew up in Africa, not only surrounded by wild things at an early age, but she was given the task by her parents to also care for them. Little did she know then that this would eventually lead to her adult mission in life in rescuing and rehabilitating orphans. I took the word her dad told her that ”If you truly love a wild animal in your care, you must one day set it free when nature calls,” to frame the book. Daphne takes this to heart upon founding her elephant orphanage with the goal of returning these same elephants to the wild. The idea that these marvelous, intelligent animals were born free and should one day be able to live freely in the wild again is another major idea I hope readers take away from the book.
Are you working on other biographies to share with children? Will this be the start of a series?
Thanks for this question. Yes, I have another book started about a young hero who discovered trash in the ocean and is now doing something about it. It was actually kids who brought this issue to my attention during my teaching awhile back. Before that, I am sad to say, I wasn’t aware of areas such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I love it when I, as a teacher, learn through my students. In fact, I have thought about the possibility of having a series about kids who, early on, show that they care for the environment enough to do something about it.

No doubt you’ve heard the saying, “Mother knows best!” But what if the baby is a six-hundred-pound elephant, and the mother is of the two-legged kind? Would the saying still hold true?
Mothering elephants is what Daphne Sheldrick did her entire life. As a young girl, she was put in charge of wounded or abandoned animals. As a grownup, Daphne and her dedicated team saved and nurtured countless elephants.
When a tiny, milk-dependent calf arrived, Daphne’s determination would be tested. No one had ever hand-reared an elephant baby this young, but what Daphne learned with Aisha would be the key to saving future orphaned elephants. What’s more, she had an elephant-sized dream of returning them to the wild!
This non-fiction biography picture book for kids is sure to inspire young budding conservationists and make the perfect gift for elephant lovers everywhere!

God is Always There Listening
Posted by Literary_Titan

Under His Divine Gaze is an inspirational personal story and guide to help readers develop their communication skills with the divine. Why was this an important story to share with the world?
Originally, my book didn’t start out as a manuscript; it began with me documenting a profound and miraculous event that transpired while I was on a pilgrimage seeking healing in Lourdes, France. As time passed, I unexpectedly found myself writing about my health trials. Since I also experienced astounding, sacred, and transformative moments during that period, I realized that I should publish my story because I believed it could help others.
I learned that one of the ways we can commune with a higher power is through earnest and devout prayer, which can eventually lead to absolute trust and complete surrender. The result is an inexplicable inner peace. St. Thérèse of Lisieux taught me this through her writings, faith, friendship, and intercession. Another reason I wanted to share my story was to further spread devotion to her.
Through sharing my spiritual memoir, I aspire to provide hope and inspiration to those who are unsure of their beliefs, are either on the verge of discovering their faith, or are already connected to the Divine —so that they, too, will see God’s extraordinary power and that of His angels and Saints.
I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your story, sharing the trials you went through to find your spiritual peace. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?
I can’t pinpoint one thing as being the hardest to express. Since my book started out as a personal journal, and writing about my situation became a therapeutic process, I just wrote freely from the heart, recollecting beautiful moments and hardships.
As I edited chapters and excerpts, old emotions resurfaced. Perhaps the most poignant memory was leaving Ruber Internacional Hospital and reliving how I felt as I gathered my files while preparing to leave the doctor’s office.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
I wanted to share the spiritual knowledge that I had attained: God is always there listening, even—or especially—when we don’t think He is; and that He won’t fail us—even if we think He has.
Another message I felt important to pass along was that gratitude can come from what is seen and unseen and arise from circumstances where we wouldn’t think it is possible. Grace and peace can be found as we journey towards God.
I also found it necessary to impart the message that there is much to be gained from learning about the lives of saints. There are patron saints for everything imaginable. Once a connection is made, what can be received from them is extraordinary—beyond expectation!
I hope my reader’s curiosity is sparked by the heavenly signs that I was granted, and that they, too, might seek to connect with God, His saints, and angels who willingly assist us.
After sharing your emotional journey, what is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?
The one take-away I hope my reader embraces is the awareness that they are always under His divine gaze.

Monique continues to desire answers from heaven, and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux finds a way to deliver. By sending her signature sign—a rose—along with a series of other distinct physical manifestations, Thérèse affirms that Monique’s prayers are heard.
Disheartened and full of despair as she confronts health related obstacles, Monique longs for a divine sustaining force. With Thérèse by her side, she turns to the Lord and discovers complete surrender and the freedom that lies therein. Yearning to further her connection with Saint Thérèse, Monique sets out on a trip to Lisieux. After all, Thérèse has become her eternal sister and friend.
Under His Divine Gaze is a beautiful chronicle of faith and growth where Monique shares the soul-felt journey of her experiences with the saints in moments of disappointment and grace.
Followers of all religious traditions will be blessed by this testament to God’s love and His mercy.
