In another part of the novel, Daniel, who is stuck in his residence hall due to a snowstorm on Thanksgiving weekend, mulls over his future steps after graduating. Finally, Lauren must decide how she wants to serve in the coming academic year. Surviving Freshman Year offers a variety of circumstances that one can encounter throughout their first year of college.
This engaging book has the feel of a compilation of short stories featuring the same setting and cast of characters. Each chapter takes a new turn and focuses on a different character, providing just enough about their backgrounds and goals to allow the reader to identify with and understand them. For example, Austin, one of the book’s protagonists, is said to go to church on Christmas and Easter but not regularly. He reminds me of a college acquaintance of mine. The cast of characters shows diversity in their engagement with organized religion, but they are still believers. This makes the book accessible to even those that may feel that just because they do not attend services each week, this is not for them, but in reality, this book is for all people.
These captivating stories are well-complimented by the thought-provoking questions that follow them. Together, they provide an imaginative and practical method of comprehending incredibly valuable and beneficial Bible lessons. I particularly liked the chapter on spiritual talents, which offers introspective questions about discovering one’s gifts. The author gently leads the reader to reach their own conclusions by posing probing questions that help them understand various concepts, including generosity, hospitality, stereotypes of Christians, temptations, volunteering, modest clothing, and others.
Surviving Freshman Year will be both enjoyable and educational for young adults and readers entering college. Its lessons are skillfully structured to assist the reader in making informed decisions based on the teachings of the Bible.

I Can Do What Daddy Can Do
Young Logan is hanging out with his dad this weekend and is going to accompany him as he completes his chores and has fun at the park. Throughout the day readers learn that, although Logan is only four years old, he can still do many of the things that his father can do.
Author Kitty Arceneaux has created a wonderful children’s book that will help parents get their kids used to the idea of doing chores. I enjoyed following Logan and his father around because it shows readers how they complete basic chores together. This will inspire little children to try new things, especially chores, and shows them that they can do things that grown-ups can do.
Readers are taken through a variety of activities and I loved just how encouraging Logan’s father was. Readers looking for an inspirational Christian picture book will love the scene at the end where the family prays together. In this wonderful scene young readers will also learn how to thank God in their prayers.
I Can Do What Daddy Can Do will show young children that they can complete chores around the house, just like dad does. This vibrant children’s book will inspire them to be helpful and to do their chores, all within a wonderfully relatable and entertaining story.

Reaping the Whirlwind
Dr. St. Clair claims that Mrs. Ida Johnson died from a heart attack, but her broken tea cup and tansy weed on her kitchen table tell another story. The apparently natural deaths of a homeless man, a congenitally disabled child, and others that followed right after her raise questions about what is happening in the town. Trent Tyson, the town’s deputy sheriff, struggles to disclose the cold-blooded murder while maintaining the peace during The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes. Reaping the Whirlwind by Rosey Dow is a murder mystery rooted in the historical Scopes trial, in which a physics teacher is accused of teaching evolution to his class against the newly enacted law that prohibited the teaching of evolution in high schools.
Author Rosey Dow has done an excellent job of blending the fictional murder mystery with the events of the Scopes trial. The murder mystery is well-written and suspenseful, and it kept me guessing until the end. Unfortunately, there was no link between the murders and no motive strong enough behind them, and it spun my head around as to who could be the murderer.
It shed a lot of light on people’s lifestyles in the twentieth century, and I found it to be very similar to small-town culture today, with some differences. The concise and analytic representation of the trial indicates the painstakingly thorough research that Dow has done. The reaction of the residents and business community is well depicted and demonstrates their efforts to attract tourists and businesses to Dayton. The book’s clean romance between Trent Tyson and Nessa McKenzie is my favorite thing. However, this book could have been more fast-paced, but I enjoyed the introduction of all the characters, from boarding house owner Mrs. McKenzie to town gardener Elmer Bentley.
Reaping the Whirlwind is a captivating historical fiction novel and mystery story. Readers interested in the Scopes Trial of 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee, will enjoy this fictional take on the case of teaching evolution and the historical ramification it had on the US. Education system. Fans of the murder mystery genre will also find it amusing.

Inspiration From a Masterpiece
Inspiration from a Masterpiece: A Work of Art is a thought-provoking book that asks many of the questions a lot of Christians would like answers to but are either too afraid to even think of them or ask them. Questions bordering on the ultimate purpose of ma, and questions on why the righteous suffer or meet with unfortunate circumstances.
Mankind has always grappled with the thought of what their purpose on earth is. For Christians, these questions come in layers wrapped around the question – how does my purpose align with God’s will? If God is all-knowing, why does he let the faithful like Job experience great trials?
This inspirational book written by D.C. Schorno opens a window into the vortex of this reality with this introductory question, “What would be your first reaction to the notion that from the point of conception, you knew exactly what you were created for?” This is then backed by stories and scripture as well as anecdotes from his life experiences. Schorno draws the reader in and and allows them to reflect on how they can live a life free of worries about how they fit into the bigger picture and also why the faithful experience mishaps.
“We cannot and we should not challenge God when we don’t fully understand what comes to pass around us, when circumstances don’t align with our hopes, and dreams, and visions.”
One of the recurring admonishments in the Christian faith is ‘to not question God’. However, there is a clear distinction between questioning God and asking God questions. This book thoughtfully demonstrates how apt it can be to have these questions on existence and purpose and to also seek answers to them.
While expressing the futility of his search for answers, Schorno, in almost a journalistic style details where his search for this grand purpose led him. The anecdotes contained herein are insightful and instructional. Schorno ends with a particularly powerful story and offers hope and comfort to the reader on what to make of one’s purpose.

Fingerprints of God by Melanie Burgess takes young readers on a scenic adventure of where on earth we could possibly find God’s fingerprints. With each question asked, it beckons us to look deeper into the truth behind everything. That God, in fact, made it all with his goodness and greatness.
This beautifully done children’s book shows children how to find God in all that surrounds us. His goodness is in everything we see, and the art and illustrations in this picture book are captivating. I was so enthralled that I couldn’t help but linger on each page long after reading the narrative.
I enjoyed that there were verses from the Bible sprinkled throughout, connecting the dots for the reader to put together. It shows that the author is well-versed in the Bible, it’s teaching, and how the information was researched and put together expertly. I also appreciated all the animal facts at the very end of the book because it felt as though the author knew people would want insight into all the creatures in the story and made sure to include it all.
Fingerprints of God is definitely an excellent book for young or beginner readers due to the simple language that the author has used. In addition, kids are so curious and are fascinated by animals, which, in my opinion, is what makes this the perfect story to get conversations started about God and his workings with young children.

The Facets of Death by James Rondinone explores many questions people have about death. The author jumps into the topic of death by studying God’s involvement in death. James Rondinone looks at whether God prevents some people from dying and why God allows others to die. The author talks about his experience with a death in his family and shares his questions after the bereavement. This sets the book up well as it shows the reader that the author is another person on an investigatory journey.
The author looks at the death of Abel from the Bible. He discusses why God did not prevent his brother, Cain, from murdering Abel. James Rondinone then uses this example to look at the topic of free will. However, the author does not stop there. The author discusses complex issues like God’s role in allowing masses of people to die and uses the example of Noah and the flood. These situations are hard to grapple with, yet James Rondinone’s thoughts on the issues are well explained.
One of the most interesting things about the book is that although it was written from a Christian perspective, the author wrote it so that anyone grappling with the topic of death could read it and gain nuggets along the way.
Before picking up the book, I decided it would be a challenging and depressing read. On the contrary, the author wrote the book from a compelling point of view. He tackled a topic from an intellectual level instead of purely an emotional level. This allows the reader to look at death from a broader point of view and gain a bigger perspective. Even though the chapters are short, parts of the book felt slow, making me want to move on to the next section.
The Facets of Death is a thought-provoking book written for people from various walks of life. It contains numerous references from the Bible and deals with a tricky topic well. Even with the Christian references, the intellectual look at the topic makes this book a great resource for anyone looking for a different take on death and grief.
