Rough Way to the High Way

Rough Way to the High Way by [Kelly Mack McCoy]

All Mack wants to do is deliver a truckload of swinging meat to Chicago and forget about his troubles. After the tragic death of his wife, he hands over his ministry to a junior preacher and returns to his first job as a truck driver. But things take a dangerous turn his first time back on the road. Someone is hell-bent on ensuring Mack doesn’t make it to Chicago in one piece. His adventure is further complicated when he picks up a mysterious hitchhiker. To make matters worse, he appears to be caught in the middle of some agribusiness hanky-panky involving top government officials and an imprisoned crime boss.

Rough Way to the High Way is Kelly Mack McCoy’s first novel, and I could hardly tell. McCoy writes with poise and fluency that pulls you in and keeps you captivated. This Christian fiction novel takes you on a journey along the highways while looking through the lens of a preacher-turned-trucker.

McCoy’s delightful mix of colorful, humorous conversations, light-hearted banter and a twist laden plot did an excellent job of keeping me engaged. Not to mention that there was this mysterious hitchhiker that kept me guessing about his actual identity all through the story.

McCoy also provides a rich reading experience with his choice of words and how he strings them together. The man genuinely has a way with words. This is visible in how he describes metaphysical scenarios using figures of speech and analogies that bring those elements to life and turn them into vivid images. I also loved how he offered faith-based insights, enlightening stories (I was very touched by Horatio Spafford’s story) and philosophical toppings.

The author zooms in on several issues, with one being the pain of losing a loved one. He shows that after such tragedy, our strongest anchors, including our faith, can be jolted by the tremors of grief and despair. McCoy also reminds us of the possibility of learning life lessons from the unlikeliest of sources.

Rough Way to the High Way is definitely one for your virtual and physical bookshelves if you are a fan of thought-provoking and exciting Christian fiction.

5 Stepping Stones to Christlike Character

George Vasilca, Author
George Vasilca Author Interview

The Diamond Soul helps readers develop a Christlike moral character. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Since I was a young man I was fascinated by existential questions like, “Who am I?”; “Why am I on this earth?”, “Is life mere existence or there is more to it?”. Later on, I realized that my engineering education did not prepare me at all for how to deal with people. I knew quite well how to manage machinery, electrical circuits and projects, but had no idea on how to talk in a meaningful way to my next-cubicle fellow engineer. He, too, was as clueless as I was. Needless to say, the more I advanced in age and climbed up the ladder of professional responsibilities, the more I realized the need to train myself in the arts of verbal communications, management, and leadership. At the same time, I begun to understand the role faith plays in the lives of us humans. I started to realize that regardless how smart and hardworking we are, there is always a higher authority that decides the outcome of our endeavors.

So, here I was, in my early fifties, searching for answers to all these difficult questions. Then is occurred to me: the moral character of the man shapes his destiny; and his faith is the unshakable foundation of his character. These are very strong convictions that I have; they are part of my core value system. And they work. Just look at all great leaders around you, and you’ll notice common virtues and character strengths: industry, integrity, thoughtfulness, modesty, love and service. But the greatest model of all was Jesus Christ when he walked as a man on the earth. Why not emulate his character strengths like humility, firmness, strength, patience and courage? We can never become him, but we should aspire to be like him.

Writing this book has been the most important project of my after-retirement years. I simply wanted to share my finding with my fellow Christians, as well with people of other spiritual orientations, such as atheists, agnostics or followers of other religions. The reason I wrote this book was to challenge, inspire and guide my readers on the road of building a strong and beautiful character mimicking Christ’s own. This character I call The Diamond Soul Character, because it is as precious, strong, and beautiful as a cut natural diamond. But, in contrast to the natural diamond which needs outside light to reveal its beauty, the human Diamond Soul character carries its own light. It, therefore, shines from within. This light is also called moral authority, and is an essential goal of anyone aspiring to better themselves.

What were some themes that were important for you to focus on in this book?

Starting a writing project about human development, confronts the author with the impossible task of selecting a few overarching ideas from the endless number of possible themes. In my case, however, the task was less daunting because I had a clear picture in my mind about the purpose of the book and its intended audience. I wanted the book to help readers clarify who they were, where they maybe at this point in their lives, and where they may desire to be tomorrow. Since the intended audience was Christian, it was also clear that the importance of faith in one’s life must be one of the prime themes to be worked on.

I would hope the readers would benefit from the three broad themes I approach in my book. The first one is that the faith is the most solid foundation one can stand on when dealing with morality. By its nature, the faith consists of a set of truths that are timeless and unchangeable. If you are a believer, you must adopt them. It is much easier for a person of faith to see the dangers of “relative morality” and to stay away from it. It is much simpler for a believer to look at Jesus Christ as the epitome of morality, than for a secular person who may have no model for morality at all. It is less complicated for a believer to dedicate himself to charity, as the Christian teachings tell him, than for an individualistic person who whats everything for himself.

The second theme of the book is that one must take charge of his life to improve himself. And how does he do it? By embracing proactivity, the mentality that you are in charge and take responsibility for your actions. You are no longer a victim of your weaknesses, your circumstance or your upbringing. You chart the course of your life by selecting a righteous path aligned with God’s preordained plans for you. Proactivity as a mindset is the most powerful tool you can acquire to build your character and find your destiny.

The third theme of the book is that the process of self-improvement is a marathon, not a sprint. You better be armed with know-how, grit and patience. And above all, have a spiritual guide, the Holy Spirit that resides in you. Building a Diamond Soul character is a cooperative project between you and the Hoy Spirit. You provide the know-how, the sweat and the toil. He provides the support, guidance and encouragement. Where does the marathon of self-improvement take you? Well, on that never-ending spiral of personal and spiritual growth that takes you closer and closer to God. Or, on that road of leading others by serving others, in other words of becoming a servant leader based on the example of Jesus Christ himself.

What do you feel is a common misconception people have about faith in their life?

This is a tough question, but I’m going to give it a try to offer my best take on it. Perhaps the most common misconception is that the spiritual life and the secular world cannot coexist. Most believers either find total refuge in their Christian faith, or get engulfed in the stormy seas of the temporal world forgetting they are children of God. Their strategy is either one of separation or of surrender. But there is a better road. My book argues that believers are best equipped to bridge the gap between spirituality and materialism, between believers and atheists. And how could they do that? The only answer is, through engagement and using their moral authority. An act of charity, a decent behavior, a friendly attitude toward everybody, everywhere and all the time speak more than a thousand words. When secular people see Christians behaving in a godly way, they for sure ask themselves the questions, “why do they do it?” and “what’s inside them that make them be this way?”. Isn’t this the beginning of the opening of one’s heart to the beauty, security and mystery of the Christian faith? I believe it is!

This is book one in your Diamond Soul trilogy. What can readers expect in the next two books?

Books two and three will provide practical applications for the Diamond Soul Character. The second book will discuss leadership issues, while the third one will focus on interpersonal relationships. In them, I will argue that only men and women of character can lead people in a Christ-inspired manner, and build meaningful, pleasant and long-lasting relationships. It is, therefore, the Diamond Soul character we acquire by following the teachings in the first book, that will provide the moral foundation for our dealings with people around us.

Ever wanted to learn more about how to improve your character to mimic Christ’s? Have you ever wondered about how to live a meaningful Christian life in today’s society? About the interplay between faith and reason and the importance of self-esteem in shaping one’s destiny?

Ever questioned why so many relationships between people living a Christian life are empty, unfulfilling, and end in disaster? Ever struggled to understand the mysterious connection between two human hearts, which beat in perfect harmony, yet maybe miles apart?

This newly released self-help book will give you a solid framework for self-improvement and personal growth. Besides, I will also show how to build a Christlike character, which I call the Diamond Soul, under the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
Why do we need divine guidance? First, we are believers living a Christian life, and second, we cannot do such a huge task alone. The Diamond Soul is the result of the cooperative yet mysterious work of the Holy Spirit residing in us, and ourselves. We supply in a positive manner the know-how, the sweat, and the perseverance. The Holy Spirit provides the guidance. The result? The growth of your persona from an ordinary believer into a highly moral mighty Warrior in Christ.

At the same time, I realize that science must provide the know-how, processes, and methods necessary to undertake such a massive personal growth project. For this reason, I draw on the fields of positive psychology, neuroscience, and human behavior. I use the latest findings regarding the undeniable bond between thoughts, self-esteem, and conduct. I add my personal observations about the role spirituality plays in this too complicated and volatile mix.

In The Diamond Soul, 5 Stepping Stones to Christlike Character, I use two metaphors. The first is the image of a beautifully cut, strong, and valuable diamond, to help people visualize their character crafted after Jesus’ own. The second depicts the arduous path up a mountain slope, using stepping stones found along the way, leading to the valuable diamond located on the peak. They cannot exist without another. You cannot reach the diamond on the summit unless you climb the mountain toward it. Conversely, if you climbed any other mountain, your efforts will have been in vain.

This book is based on my experience and struggle for personal growth, searching proactively for God, and developing moral character traits aspiring to be like Christ’s. The battle to change myself has transformed my life and made me a more positive person. The new moral authority and self-esteem, which the Diamond Soul character afforded me, had a tremendous impact on the people around me, be they family members, friends, employees, or business associates.

Don’t Give Up on Me

Don't Give Up on Me (An Otter Bay Maine Novel) by [Jodi Artzberger]

Don’t Give Up on Me begins with Amanda facing a deadly situation. After being attacked, officers are called to the scene which is the catalyst for an old flame to come back into her life. Ryker left Amanda heartbroken so long ago, and Amanda, rightfully, wants nothing to do with him. Amanda is left with no choice when he’s tasked with leading the investigation and keeping Amanda safe. Amanda is forced to deal with a man she has tried hard to forget, and old feelings come bubbling up to the surface. Can Amanda accept this man back into her life, and into her heart?

Don’t Give Up on Me is a riveting romance novel that explores an array of emotions that come with having your heart broken and your life threatened. Amanda is certainly dealing with a lot, and her inner turmoil and angst is something that kept this book consistently entertaining. Amanda is a bit naïve at first, but I enjoyed the slow evolution of her character.

The relationship between Amanda and Ryker added a much needed boost to this overall mystery novel. I would categorize this book as a lite-mystery, as its focus is on the compelling characters  within and their dramatic relationship. Jodi Artzberger explores themes of forgiveness, our relationship with God, and how people change through life experiences. These are powerful messages delivered in heartfelt moments throughout the book.

Amanda and Ryker have an intriguing history together. And exploring that history, and their current predicament, is the one thing that kept me coming back to this book. This story reminds me of a Lifetime made for TV movie; where the drama is palpable and the suspense is high. Jodi Artzberger has written an engrossing romantic thriller with an infusion of Christian ideals that makes this perfect for anyone looking for an exciting, but ultimately uplifting, read.

Messiah for the Universe

Author Interview
Rev. Steven J. Boint Author Interview

Did Jesus Die For Dogs? examines the relationship between nature and God’s salvation. Why was this an important book for you to write?

We miss so much when we ignore the full scope of salvation: understanding, joy, and purpose to name a few things. What I mean by understanding is, for example, we all know that Jesus was born in a manger. The focus in Christmas sermons is almost always on his humility. But, where else COULD he have been born? If he is the savior of the whole creation, it is only fitting that he be born surrounded by humans AND ANIMALS. The first Adam was born surrounded by plants and animals, the same needed to be true for the second Adam. The lyricist of “Joy to the World” understood this; when explaining the meaning of Jesus’ birth he wrote: “. . . let men their songs employ while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow nor thorns infest the ground. He comes to make His blessings flow far as the Curse is found [the Curse being the twisting of the universe by sin].” He understood that the Messiah would bring in a renewed universe where the lamb would lie down beside the lion. The Curse would be lifted and Eden would return. Christ was messiah for the universe.

We miss joy because we miss God’s presence around us. The Gospel of John starts “In the beginning was the logos. . . “ Logos is usually translated as “word.” But to many if not most of John’s original audience, they would have read it in accord with popular stoic philosophy which used logos to refer to the rational structure of the universe. The very foundation of the universe became flesh. Johannes Kepler, founder of modern science and a Lutheran pastor, explained to an acquaintance that he studied science to understand the regularly repeated acts of God’s self-revelation. For Kepler, and biblically, each reflection on a body of water is placed there actively by God. Wind is God moving each molecule of air. All things hold together because God actively holds them together. The universe is not a machine wound up and now running on its own. In other words, God surrounds us and the whole world is holy.

And although I don’t draw these implications in the book, we miss purpose because we think only preachers and evangelists matter to the Kingdom of God. But this whole world is loved by God. We scratch God’s heart when we misuse creation. Global warming, plastic in the oceans, habitat reduction . . . how can Christians stand by and let what is loved by our Creator and Redeemer be decimated? Once we understand the depth of God’s love for bees, songbirds, frogs, polar bears, the need to defend them is obvious.

What do you feel is a common misconception people have about God’s salvation?

Certainly most Christians view salvation as a ticket out of hell and into an otherworldly eternal church service. The biblical picture is much different. Salvation is a never-ending process of being engulfed by the whirlwind of God’s creativity. God built a physical universe and we are physical parts of that universe. This universe, though twisted now, will be restored and become the arms of its creator wrapped around each one of us. God did not create us to live in an ethereal realm, that’s why, according to the Bible, the universe will be physically renewed and we will be physically resurrected.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?

Assurance that all parts of this creation matter to its creator. God will not lose what God has created. All will be restored. It is as true for critters as for people, “God is God of the living, not of the dead.”

This book certainly has an attention grabbing title. What was the inspiration behind the book’s title?

I’ve watched the sadness, almost despair, of believers who have lost a pet. The church seldom offers any consolation although it should because salvation embraces animals as well as people. I wanted to drive that home with the title. The subtitle “What does the Bible say?” lets readers know this is a study of actual scripture. Other authors have covered this material from a history of theology standpoint, but presenting the biblical picture is less common. I wanted to let the audience know that the Bible affirms the everlasting value of the relationships we form with animals.

Do animals go to heaven? Are humans the center of God’s universe? Is polluting Earth a sin? Is fighting to sustain habitat a form of witness? Decide for yourself! This theological discussion lays bare the major biblical themes that involve nature, allowing each reader to draw informed conclusions within his or her Christian tradition. Noteworthy not merely for what it includes, but also for what it leaves out, “Did Jesus Die For Dogs?” examines the relationship between nature and God’s salvation as revealed in scripture. Limiting discussion to the main thread of salvation history, this discussion avoids favoring one Christian tradition over others while highlighting biblical themes that theologians from all traditions should include in their understanding of the work of Christ. And . . . YES!

God, Are You Listening?

God, are you listening?: Hearing His voice through forgiveness and faith has several explanations and exercises that can help you be positive when dealing with changes in your life. We all have some moments where we feel down and we feel as though our life doesn’t have any meaning. It is in these times that we must speak with Him. He will help us overcome everything, we just need to be faithful and loyal.

Bryant has written an excellent guide to give readers the push that they need to find joy in the smallest things. The day has come for you to find your purpose in life, don’t create excuses because with this book you won’t be able to find any! I am truly amazed with the author’s writing and how she makes you feel at peace with yourself and feel happiness through God. This book made me look deep into myself and think of the person I want to be and how I want others to perceive me. I know I am not alone and felt comfort in the words of this book.

I must admit that I felt lighter after reading this book and that is why I recommend it to all who are not only going through a dark time in their life, but also to the ones who need to find themselves. I truly enjoyed the C. Michelle Bryant’s positivity and encouragement.

Better Than Our Dogs

In John Murray’s latest book, Better Than Our Dogs, he uses the interesting lives and behaviors of his and his neighbor’s dogs to impart faith-based life lessons. Not only has he beautifully captured God’s love in his words but he also managed to write in a non-judgemental way that would attract even those outside the faith.

This story follows the lives of five dogs; Socrates, Chloe, Darby, Young Pup, and Old Vet, so deeply explaining their mannerisms and temperaments that you would be forgiven for mistaking them for actual people. Truly, character development doesn’t get better than this.

By drawing parallels between his relationship with his dogs and our relationship with God, he brings life to Biblical principles, clearly laying out lessons that we can all apply in our lives. I also like that the author draws on Greek mythology as well to bring more clarity to his points.

Moreover, the way he manages to draw the same message from different stories and weaves them together is something to behold.  He also does the reverse quite efficiently, fetching different lessons from a single story.

I truly appreciate about the simple and whimsical delivery. Needless to say, this is one of the easiest books to read. It’s not too wordy and there aren’t any long paragraphs of meaningless information.

It is captivating and straight to the point, yet still giving you enough to leave a long-lasting impression. It is clear that John really put his heart and soul into this. As this book is written in his voice and is actually about real-life experiences, it feels very personal, as if we are peeking into his innermost musings. Coupled with its gut-wrenching epilogue, it is this that I believe makes this book so relatable. Some of the running themes in this book include the fragility of life and the importance of loyalty and serving others.
