The Beauty of Life

Marvin Brauer Author Interview

A Sea Tail follows a retired dentist who is shown a dead fish with scales and skin, leading him to embark on an adventure to determine if mermaids exist. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I started working on A Sea Tail on a week-long vacation to Topsail Island, North Carolina. I had recently finished my first book, Shall Die by the Sword, and had gotten bogged down in the sequel. So, I was in a space where I was not writing anything major at the time. Being the father of two daughters, however, I was always trying to write books that appealed to them. And nothing appeals to a preteen girl like a mermaid. Furthermore, since I was a child, I have always been interested in fantasy and folklore. The final stimulus was a small sequence in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies that had a side story about a mermaid. That got me writing. And as for Venice, it is the most beautiful city in the world, and what a place to merge water, fantasy, and story.

What was your inspiration for Dr. Manque’s character, and how did you craft his outlook on life?

For the lead character I wanted someone with some quirks, and in contrast to my first book, I wanted to write the main character as a little older. Also, I wanted to paint him as someone who could be stone deaf to the beauty of Venice.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

That’s a good question. There are a lot of things I could talk about: how our modern age can be so sterile for one, and how we have distanced ourselves from our past for another, but maybe the theme I was most interested in was beauty, and by that I don’t mean physical beauty, although the mermaid is portrayed as staggeringly beautiful, what I was exploring was the beauty of life, and becoming aware of how a beautiful life is one connected to others. And how discovering that someone needs us is just about the most beautiful thing in the world.

What is the next book that you’re working on, and when can your fans expect it out?

Thank you for asking. My next book is The Ordinary Adventures of Somerset Soames von Hesse. This is a coming-of-age novel about a young boy growing up in a missionary family in Egypt, Lebanon, and the coming back to the states in the 60’s. The story centers around the fourth child, Somerset, and his quirks, and his fascinations. It also deals with the tension because he likes the Beatles and fiction, and both of those are highly discouraged in his faith group. The book will be out in paperback within the next couple of weeks.

Beyond that, I will be working on Volume 2 of my epic fantasy series.

As Lorenzo, the Venetian boat captain, led Dr. Manque to the isolated pier just down the canal from the Rialto Bridge, the American couldn’t help but wonder what his friend had in store for him. Little did he know, a dead fish would be the catalyst for a thrilling adventure that would test his beliefs and put his quiet retirement at risk. Why did his friend need him to see this? It was just a dead fish, after all. But as Dr. Manque knelt down and felt the scales, something didn’t add up. Scale, scale, scale, scale, skin. This was no ordinary fish. And just like that, his peaceful life as a recluse was in serious jeopardy. But what creature could have both scales and skin? As a man of science, he couldn’t help but dismiss the idea of a mermaid. But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he begins to question his own beliefs. Could it be? Could it really be? With his background in dentistry seeming more and more irrelevant, Dr. Manque is faced with a thrilling and impossible possibility. A mermaid? No, no, no! But what else could explain it? Dive into the unknown with Dr. Manque as he uncovers the truth behind this mythical creature and risks everything in the process. Fans of adventure and the supernatural won’t want to miss out on this gripping tale. For fans of “The Da Vinci Code,” “The Lost City of Z,” and “The Shadow of the Wind,” this book is a must-read.

My Land, My Nile

My Land, My Nile, by Maria Zeinab, is a sweeping and multi-generational tale that threads together history, myth, and personal memory along the Nile’s banks, from the Abyssinian Highlands to the Nubian Valley. It blends the oral traditions of Nubian culture with vivid depictions of displacement, political tension, and familial bonds. Through interwoven narratives, crocodiles as sacred guardians, the fall of the legendary Yahodi Nog, and the odyssey of Nabra-Isat Soliman returning to her ancestral land, Zeinab paints a textured portrait of a people’s resilience against the tides of time, politics, and water. The novel drifts between the past and present, memory and vision, often blurring the lines between the real and the mystical.

Reading this book felt like stepping into an old Nubian home where the walls are lined with family photographs, some faded, some vivid, each whispering a story. Zeinab’s writing is drenched in sensory detail like the smell of sandalwood, the glint of green crocodile eyes, the oppressive hush of a summer noon, and that attention to the tangible pulls readers deep into the narrative. Her characters are layered, never reduced to tropes, and their conversations carry the weight of centuries. That said, the lyrical style can be somewhat demanding. The shifts between timelines and voices require patience, but for me, that challenge was part of the reward. The story never panders. It trusts the reader to wander, to get a little lost, and to return richer.

What moved me most was how the novel treats loss, not just the loss of people, but the erasure of land, language, and ways of life. Zeinab doesn’t rush to offer hope. Instead, she lets grief sit in the room, lets it breathe beside the characters, until its edges soften into something like acceptance. I felt my chest tighten during the moments of cultural theft, like when Nubian names are stripped from official documents, because it’s not just fiction; it mirrors real wounds that history keeps opening. Yet even in the heaviest passages, the story never forgets the beauty of what it’s trying to preserve. It’s a rare balance of lament and love.

I would recommend My Land, My Nile to readers who appreciate historical fiction that leans into poetry and myth, and to anyone who has a soft spot for intergenerational sagas rooted in place. For those who have ever felt the pull of an ancestral home, whether visited or only imagined, this book will feel like a homecoming, with all the joy, ache, and ghosts that it entails.

History and Heritage

Jordan Hampton Author Interview

The Word of Y’Neshu: Heart of the Ijeya follows the journeys of J’Kana, a steadfast Kanawe, and his son Kamari as they navigate the complexities of familial bonds, spiritual trials, and ancient traditions. I think this original idea is intriguing. How did you come up with this idea and develop it into a story?

It all began with J’Karo. I spent 2023 researching a plethora of African cultures and languages to develop the concept of Y’Neshu, and even discovered my own Mandinka, Fulani, Kpelle, and Mende heritage in the process. From there, it was about creating a language using linguistic commonalities from across the African continent and building in historical occupations and concepts from tribes in my own heritage and others. I figured that the best way to accomplish the learning of the culture and the language was through a story all about a Master and Apprentice, so I wanted to tell the story in two parts. The Past, which shows J’Kana’s training under Kanawe Y’Sawe, and the Present, where we find that J’Kana is teaching his son Kamari about the history of their family (more on that later). I wanted to write something that could be appreciated by everyone, but also bring to light the beauty of African cultures that are oftentimes ignored in the stream of 21st-century literature. I also realized along the way that there are other people like me at the start, who were Black and wanting to reconnect with their heritage in a way that they previously couldn’t have. So this is as much a gift to the Black community as it is to those who just love a good fantasy.

I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from, and how did it change as you were writing?

Y’Neshu is actually a J’Karo word that means “Divine Crown,” and I pulled from a number of different geographical fixtures in the African continent. Deserts, plains, shorelines, grasslands, mountains, volcanoes, and forests that span the entirety of the continent were important so that it could truly feel as realistic as it was fantastic. As I went through the story, though, it forced me to think about the finer details and how Y’Neshu itself fits into the grander scheme of the War of the Ancients, the training of the ijeya, and the cultures that blossom all across the Four Empires.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Identity is a huge focus for this story. When J’Kana and his Father, Y’Sawe (Spoiler Alert but I guess not really) are first introduced in the Prelude, they’re nameless characters with a lot of personality. You see the love between a father and son, you feel the heartache when Shifi burns, and even though J’Kana turns into J’Foja on the streets of Memifi, something in him remains joyful and playful despite it all. The exploration of the Kanawe, the struggle over the J’Karo and Batabari languages, and the backstories of other characters like Nihani, Chishashi. and J’Chera all play into that theme of identity.

Through Mahute the Dagger and the Kanawe, there also comes a thematic focus on Education vs. Tradition that brings up the questions of 1) Should we accept tradition at the expense of heritage, 2) Is educating ourselves on our history and heritage worth it if it costs us who we have become, and finally, 3) Who can be trusted to teach the history of groups whose heritage has been denied them?

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

This is the first book in the series, and the second book is almost done! The next book continues J’Kana’s story, with more J’Karo lessons, more exploration of Y’Neshu, and a deeper connection to the ike overall! Also, it should be noted that J’Kana’s story is only one of the trilogies that I have planned in Y’Neshu! Every protagonist has already been revealed, so definitely stay tuned.

The Word of Y’Neshu: Heart of the Ijeya is a 112,000-word Pan-African fantasy novel that blends linguistic and cultural aspects from across the African diaspora to create an alternate universe that taps into the power of language and culture. Audiences will be treated to interesting takes on legendary creatures from a number of African mythologies, vibrant environments untapped by the modern age, magic born from the soul of Y’Neshu’s people, and Languages of Power born from hard-sought commonalities in African phonetics. This is more than a story; this is the first step on a bridge to a heritage that those in the African diaspora have been deprived of for too long, and a powerful expression of everything that we are. This is Y’Neshu, and I bid you welcome.

The Guardians of Earth

Guardians of Earth by Oriane Livingston is an eco-fantasy tale that combines myth, magic, and environmental activism. We follow Oona, a young girl who discovers that Earth is in grave danger, largely due to humanity’s actions and a sinister cosmic force known as the Dark Planet. Guided by Eterna, the spirit of Earth, Oona must rally her courage and inner powers to protect Earth’s balance. She’s joined by two other young guardians, Aqiwo and Nawal, as they navigate a world filled with talking animals, wise spirits, and ancient mysteries. Their mission is monumental. They must restore the sacred connection between humans and nature or risk losing the Earth forever.

Livingston’s writing has a beautiful and almost cinematic quality. She describes scenes with an awe-inspiring vibrancy, painting the natural world as though it’s a sacred tapestry. One passage that stood out to me is when Eterna, the spirit of Earth, speaks to Oona amid a lavender sky filled with giant lilac squirrels and fragrant blossoms. It’s so imaginative and surreal that I felt completely transported. Livingston doesn’t just show us nature’s beauty, she imbues it with a mystical glow. The writing is lush and evocative, yet at times, I felt like it leaned heavily on description.

Another aspect of the book that I liked is the powerful environmental message. Oona’s journey is driven by the need to reconnect humanity with Earth. This theme resonates strongly today, especially when we see Earth being harmed by pollution, deforestation, and climate change. One intense moment occurs when Oona witnesses majestic sequoias being cut down with the sap flowing like blood. The sorrow she feels as she watches helplessly is a reminder of the destructive impact humanity can have. Livingston’s clear passion for environmental activism shines here, making the book not just a fantasy but also a wake-up call.

Oona’s character is relatable and engaging. She’s young, curious, and brave but also vulnerable. Her connection to her mother and her struggles with her family add a touching depth to her character. The scene where her father dismisses her achievements hit me hard. It felt real and painfully relatable. It’s also a story about a girl finding her inner strength despite family issues and self-doubt.

Guardians of Earth is a unique and beautifully crafted tale that I’d recommend to anyone who loves stories where magic meets environmentalism. If you’re looking for a story that combines the wonder of fantasy with a heartfelt call to action, this one is worth diving into.

Making Sense Of The Insanity Of Moralities

Cristoph A. T. Author Interview

Re-birth tells the compelling story of Anessa’s reincarnation in the intriguing fantasy world of Anfang. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

I’ve been a fan of Mythology of almost every variety. As a child I was always intrigued by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and being pulled through to a new world.

Anessa is an intriguing and well-developed character. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Anessa is a logical view of what might happen to a western person should they be taken at the point of their death and placed on a new planet through divine intervention. She’s lost, confused, and must navigate a new world alone, forging new bonds, making sense of the insanity of moralities that are different from what knew she on Earth.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Our world is on the precipice of some vital changes to personal rights. Anfang represents an exploration of an ideal, and in future volumes I may tinker with how easily it can crumble.

The exception to this question is nobles using marriages to form bonds between families as chess pieces, but that is a component of medieval societies, not of a theme I wanted to explore.

When and where will your book be available?

Re-Birth will be available November 24, 2022, on Amazon in eBook, Paperback (black and white) and Hardback (full color). The eBook is on sale for $4.99 until 1/1/2023. The sale pricing for the paperback and hardback are beyond my control as I’ve already found out.

Minotaur’s Lair

Minotaur’s Lair – Servant of the Gods – Book Three by Luciana Cavallaro is the final installment in the trilogy, which follows Evan, who must face Queen Antioche and stop the Dark Master from becoming a deity. If the Dark Master successfully gains this power, Evan and his alliances face an uncertain future. There are many unexpected twists throughout his journey and fate, making this book an incredible read.

The story maintains a consistent pace that conjures excitement from the start. Cavallaro creates an action-packed tale with elements of ancient mythology and mystical places, contrasting with time travel and modern technology. Evan must quickly adapt and learn how his quest shifts from one challenge to the next, whether Queen Antioch attempts to entice him with tempting gifts and promises or he becomes face-to-face with a new enemy. He must also follow his father’s legacy by locating a sacred artifact while defeating his captors.

Cavallaro’s fantastic writing style is sharp and descriptive without slowing the story’s pace. The author thoroughly researches the architecture, landscapes, and scenarios in mythology. It’s a fantastic adventure full of exciting developments and lively characters. As the story delves into the thrilling mythology of an ancient world, Evan becomes eager to find a way home to his time in the future.

I found this book, and the trilogy, an excellent story that’s engaging and enjoyable from start to finish. The author does a fantastic job of creating an intricate world with layers of fascinating developments and characters that keep the reader moving from one chapter to the next. Minotaur’s Lair – Servant of the Gods – Book Three by Luciana Cavallaro is an excellent read for science fiction and fantasy fans. I recommend the trilogy and look forward to more books from this author.

Ylmi’s Saga

Ylmi's Saga (The Legends of Karik Book 2) by [Evan Oliver]

Ylmi’s Saga: Legends of Karik, by Evan Oliver, is the second book in this thrilling saga. Book two begins with a lord of Vrania telling the tale of Ylmi One-Eye. Ylmi is a girl who learns to hunt for the survival of her family. The Jarl of the settlement, Unhost, exiles those who disagree with him and the dragon of the mountain. Unhost made a deal with this dragon to keep the gold found on their settlement. This deal is only the beginning, and the story catapults forward from there.

Ylmi’s character develops in intriguing ways throughout the story, starting out as a cautious girl and turning into a fierce dragonslayer who becomes Jarl of Dragonsrest. Along the way Ylmi bonds with other exiles and they hatch a plan to kill the dragon of the mountain. Together they slay the dragon, go to war, and give the settlement a true leader, and I loved every moment of this adventure.

The writing style is easy and fluid and keeps the focus on the action or characters. While reading you forget that this is a narration of Ylmi’s accomplishments. As a reader you can become immersed in the story and, while it does feel a little fantastic, it still delivers some hard hitting and entertaining scenes fit for Hollywood.

While I enjoyed the story, I felt that there was a lot of background and plot development to get through because this was the second book in a series. Ylmi and Karik’s character were compelling and well developed characters, but I wish all the characters in the book were so well developed.

Ylmi’s Saga: Legends of Karik is a rousing adventure story following a strong female character on a harrowing journey that is fun from star to finish. I would recommend this book to sword and sorcery fans looking for a epic young adult adventure inspired by Norse and Viking myths.

Jon Bragg Blue Essence

Jon Bragg Blue Essence by [Kenney Myers]

Jon Bragg Blue Essence by Kenney Myers is a thrilling adventure story filled with Norse mythology. The story explores the life of teenager Jon Bragg and the links his community has with the Norse God’s; Thor, Loki and Bragi. Jon is a regular, if not introverted, sixteen-year-old, with a passion for reading and poetry. His world is tipped upside-down when ‘Coach’ and his son Dustin move to Grinwell.

Jon Bragg’s Blue Essence is set in the town of Grinwell Iowa, in the present day. There are vivid descriptions of the cold and bitter winter conditions on Grinwell.  The detailed clothing descriptions and music and technology choices all give the time setting an authentic feel. It contrasts well with the Norse mythology that is embedded in the story. The vivid descriptions immediately draw the reader into the story and make the setting feel authentic.

There are a handful of intriguing main characters in this novel, Jon, his parents, sister Jill and best friend Marc and Dustin, his father – Coach. Minor characters include other school mates and schoolteachers. The main characters are well described, in what they wear and their physical attributes. Jon’s small frame contrasts with Dustin’s athletic prowess. Their personalities are also well described, and also contrasting in unique and interesting ways that play off of one another well. Jon is quiet and reserved, Dustin is confident and self-assured. The dialogue differentiates each of the characters with vocabulary choices matching each character colorful persona. The relationships between the characters is interesting, as author Kenney Myers highlights the different social strata in high school and the differing relationships children and parents can have.

Although the story is told from numerous points of view, it is easy to differentiate as the characters are well developed and individual. The character names are indicated at the top of each chapter. The story immediately draws you in, beginning with Jon’s sixteenth birthday. This book is of particular interest if you enjoy reading about Norse Gods. Although mythology is an integral part of the story, the myths weave in and out of the story, combining modern day living with Norse mythology.

Jon Bragg Blue Essence is a riveting young adult fantasy novel that draws on Norse mythology in uniquely compelling ways to tell a rousing story that will keep readers fully engaged with this memorable book.
