Twin Adventures: Farmhouse Visit

Twin Adventures: Farmhouse Visit takes Kate and Tate, and readers, on a fun-filled adventure to grandma and grandpa’s house out on the farm. While grandma and grandpa show Kate and Tate their daily activities on the farm their imaginations run away from them and they end up making friends with two adorable bunnies.

Book two in Pat Henry’s Twin Adventure series has readers imaging all the fantastic things one can do on a farm. I found this to be a lovely diversion for young readers who are consumed with their electronics. This genial children’s book shows how much fun it can be on a farm and, staying true to the series theme, it shows just how much fun using your imagination can be.

I appreciate how consistent that bright graphic art is throughout the whole Twin Adventures series. Illustrator Bryant Albert is able to capture Kate and Tate’s emotions throughout the book and is able to make every scene vibrant.

Twin Adventures: Farmhouse Visit takes readers on a simple but fun adventure that will inspire your child to use their imagination. This is an upbeat and cheerful kids book that shows a family having fun on a farm.

Twin Adventures: Rainy Day

Rainy days often keep children inside where they are forced to play with their same old indoor games. When Kate and Tate’s plans get ruined by a rain day, they set their imagination loose and end up on a hunt for a dragon. Yet another spectacular adventure awaits those with an active imagination.

Rainy Day by Pat Henry and Paul Henry IV, is my favorite book of the Twin Adventure series because I feel like there is so much more happening in this story. Tate and Kate are stuck inside because of the rain. Their adventure begins when they find toy keys, which lead them to their cubby under the stairs, which leads them to a toy chest, and the toys inside ignited their imagination. I enjoyed reading through these fun series of events, which continues well into their imaginative adventure, as it gave it a storybook feel. Whereas in other books Kate and Tate just had a bit of fun, here Tate is put to the test when he must save his sister from danger, and then then tables are turned and Kate must save her brother. So much fun!

Kate and Tate take readers on a very imaginative adventure, and illustrator Bryant Albert is up to the task of bringing all their wild imaginings to life on the page. From a Fruit Palace to hunting a dragon through strawberry hills, all of the fantastic imagery conveys the same whimsy and wonder of the story.

Twin Adventures: Rainy Day is a fun adventure story for children that shows how imagination can be the key to a thrilling adventure, even when rain keeps you inside.

Andrew’s Awesome Adventures with His ADHD Brain

Children with ADHD fight battles most of us will never understand. Each day finds them experiencing a constant barrage of thoughts, all competing to find their way to the forefront. Parents and teachers alike can benefit from truly listening to a child’s account of an average day living with ADHD, especially Inattentive Subtype. The Inattentive Subtype of ADHD is a prevalent but often not recognized. Andrew is a child living with ADHD, and his journal-style account of his life is the focus of his mother’s book. Kristin M. Wilcox’s book describes both the child’s and the parent’s experience with this incredibly challenging disorder.

Andrew’s Awesome Adventures with His ADHD Brain is a unique account of a family’s understanding of the disorder that is a part of their day-to-day lives. Wilcox artfully divides the book into two main parts–one from her son’s perspective and one from her own. She has handed parents and teachers a thorough look at what a child hears each day as he tries to focus and time and time again loses sight of the last thought he had as easily as he breathes.

I more than appreciated Andrew’s perspective. As a teacher, I have seen many students over the years fighting their own inner battles. Only those who live with ADHD know the inner banter, and Andrew’s very thorough commentary allows readers to gain a true understanding of the chaos that can ensue and the emotional toll ADHD can take on the entire family. This is a must-read for any parent of a child with ADHD.

Wilcox manages to give readers a guide that is not only informative but simple to read. There is nothing worse than actively seeking information on a topic only to find the resources dry, boring, and incredibly difficult to understand. Wilcox bypasses all of those issues and hands readers valuable information on one of the least understood types of ADHD. I found the Wilcox family’s story to be immensely helpful in the elementary classroom. Wilcox’s appendices are a wonderful resource for families and educators. This easy-to-follow list of questions and answers regarding symptoms and signs is especially beneficial to families and educators.

I highly recommend Andrew’s Awesome Adventures with His ADHD Brain to any parent who has a child dealing with the symptoms of ADHD. Schools would benefit greatly by adding this to their teachers’ resource rooms or to their recommended reading lists. This is the book families and teachers have needed for decades.

CARE GIVING GIFT OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

Author David Soh Poh Huat teaches us that caregiving is a gracious gift. It is notable, a calling, and a gift that is sometimes overlooked. In his book Caregiving Gift of Unconditional Love, David Soh Poh Huat extensively writes about caregiving. However, he primarily focuses on the qualities of a good caregiver and the impact caregivers have on families and the larger community.

Readers will learn through this book why it is important to spread love and positive energy to those who offer caregiving services and the elders and sick in need of caregiving. This book discusses the different angles of caregiving on an intimate level. Gently, the author invites the reader into his world, a world that will make the reader appreciate caregivers more.

David Soh Poh Huat warmly talks about his family, especially his father, Thomas, and sister, Susan. In his book, readers learn about having a close-knit family. Through the author’s story, the reader is shown the raw and explicit facts about caregiving. The author explains that sometimes it can be overwhelming, but it is a fulfilling experience. This well-thought-out book is a guidebook on how to take care of loved ones.

The book takes one on a rollercoaster of emotions. Readers can resonate with what he discusses and even bond with him through his text. For example, when talking about his sister, one can feel his words’ love, tenderness, and empathy. I enjoyed reading about David and his relationship with his sister, as one gets to learn that sibling love conquers everything.

Reading about Thomas was amazing too. Through David and his father, readers get enlightened about the essence of having a patriarch and the rewards of being part of a loving family. The primary lesson in this book is to be kind and accommodating to all. If you can offer caregiving services, do so without expecting anything. There is something beautiful about giving back to others through caregiving.

The cordial language applied by the author, his truthfulness, and how to open David Soh Poh Huat when showing his vulnerable side is appealing. I love how short the chapters are and how easy it is to complete the book in one sitting. Every page has some wisdom to appreciate.

Caregiving Gift of Unconditional Love is an educational book about caregiving, and what makes this book a great read is the author’s display of compassion. David is genuine with his readers and writes his reality. His story is uplifting, and his writing style reassuring.

A Fun, Entertaining Book with a Positive Role-Model

Once Upon a Dance Author Interview

Dance Stance, Beginning Ballet for Young Dancers teaches readers, children, and adults, how to improve their posture with tips from an actual ballerina. Why was this an important book to write?

We’re making the books I wished for as a dance teacher and mom. I loved watching things click for my daughter when she’d have a new teacher describe things differently, so giving kids more ways to think about technique as well as a fun, entertaining book with a positive role-model was important. As a teacher with decades’ experience teaching all ages, these highlight some of the most effective descriptions that have helped my students. Weaved in are helpful lessons and tips from a ballerina that we wanted to share.

I love Prisilla the cat, where did the idea to include her come from?

My illustrator added the kitty cat sidekick – it makes the book so special. We actually did a social media vote for the kitty’s name and got many great ideas—in the final draft, the cat’s name is Ballerina Kittina.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

The first book I wrote for this age group was actually all about falling, but I went back and created Dance Stance, thinking that was a better starting point. So Falling into Dance is next up, and then we want to deep dive into turning after that.

One of the messages from Dance Stance is that ballet doesn’t have to be life-consuming. I quit cold turkey when I was fourteen because I didn’t know how to take just a few classes – it felt like it had to be all (40 hours a week) or nothing, and I’ve talked to so many people who had similar experiences, some who returned to dance years later wishing they never stopped.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

Eka and the Elephants arrives in a few weeks. It’s part of the Dance-It-Out! series for kids ages 4-7.

Aspiring dancers adore the clever mix of wit, wisdom, anecdotes, and how-to instruction from a professional ballerina. Throughout the award-winning debut of ballet inspiration, young readers explore posture while standing, on tiptoes, and on one leg. A tutu-wearing kitty sidekick joins Ballerina Konora and friends, adding humor and lighthearted encouragement.
Brought to you by the mother-daugther team of Once Upon a Dance, with over 20 awards for their Dance-It-Out! and Dancing Shapes series for younger audiences. Dance Stance debuts their trilogy for kids ages 8+.
