Vitamin Therapy for Stronger Bones

Bryant Lusk Author Interview

Bryant Lusk Author Interview

Osteoporosis & Osteopenia: Vitamin Therapy for Stronger Bones is a comprehensive guide to bone health. Why was this an important book for you to write?

My father died when I was very young. Despite the poverty that surrounded me during my childhood, my mother prepared meals packed with vitamins and minerals. This allowed my brain to soak up data at a higher than average rate, which empowered me to succeed despite the challenges. As I became a man, I began to appreciate the power of basic nutrition and vitamin supplements.

I have been a public servant for most of my adult life. It is my most fervent hope to share information that can improve the lives of others, just as my life has improved in such an incredible fashion. I chose to write about osteoporosis because it is one of the lowest hanging fruits for disease prevention that the average person can readily address. Low bone density is becoming a global threat that can be easily deterred. Raising awareness and providing simple solutions if the purpose of this book.

This is the first of a three-book series on vitamin therapy for disease treatment and prevention. I am calling the series “Share The Health.”

The book focuses on the link between lifestyle choices, age, gender, eating habits, and bone health. What is a common misconception you find many people have about bone health?

Excellent question! There is no single answer because misconceptions evolve over time. For decades calcium was considered the end-all-be-all to improving bone health. We finally realized that excessive calcium intake was generating heart disease, especially in women, at an alarming rate. This misconception harmed a lot of families and caused a lot of heart-ache, literally. We now know that vitamin K2 was one of the missing links in the bone building process.

I would say a common misconception today (and for some time) is viewing a symptom as the only issue to address. For instance, if I were to test positive for low vitamin D levels in my blood, the typical approach would be to have me ingest more vitamin D. In my book, I point out that the vitamin D measured inside of your blood is not the same as that which you ingest or obtain from sun exposure. Vitamin D is transformed inside of your liver to another state. It is this second version of D that is measured inside of your blood. The liver-transformation process relies on several co-factors including magnesium and zinc. So rather than viewing low vitamin D as the issue, I recommend viewing it as a potential symptom of some other underlying problem such as a magnesium deficiency or liver injury. Yes. If you take more vitamin D, you will increase the overall levels measured in your blood. However, you may also be masking the underlying root cause of the deficiency, which may lead to other health issues in the future, such as osteoporosis.

Additionally, fad diets and some very popular fat-burning products can be very damaging to your bones even though they are perceived as being good for you (another misconception). Osteoporosis develops very gradually. You feel fine for years until you suffer micro-fractures resulting in back pain. By then, the damage to your bone health is fairly severe. Additionally, few people are tested for low bone density until they are in their 60s. Thus, the fad-dieter or fat-burning product user feel perfectly fine as their bones slowly deteriorate. However, vitamin therapy can slow, prevent, or improve the condition at almost any stage of an individual’s bone health. The sooner you start to address specific nutrient deficiencies the better off you will be.

What is your professional background and how has that helped you write this book?

I am that 2nd-grade geek that teachers marveled at. My professional background is in highly technical fields such as military and commercial aircraft avionics, ground-based radar technology, airport instrument landing systems, and a whole lot of other nerdy things. I have always been fascinated with biology, technology, space travel, and the overall human condition. Anything related to science grabs my attention. As a Civil Servant, I served as an Air Traffic Safety Inspector, and a Technical Operations Quality Control Specialist. I researched and generated reports in Washington DC that influenced how the world flies today. I studied and analyzed tons of data to identify trends in seemingly unrelated areas associated with America’s National Airspace System, which is the busiest and most complex airspace system on Earth.

This book has been a major undertaking. My ability to conduct research into very complex subject matter enables me to see the whole process of very technical systems and the ripple effects that often go unnoticed. I simply applied what I enjoy doing into the subject of the human process for developing bone tissue. I did not go too deep into it as this was meant for general consumption. However; academia, medical experts, and fitness professionals will likely find some useful information in my book as well.

There are doctors and scientists that know a whole lot more than I do on the subject of bone development. However, I try to serve as the bridge between highly technical subject-matter and the average person who is simply living their life to the best of their knowledge and ability. I hope that my book goes deep enough to educate the general public, but not so deep as to lose them ten words into the discussion. This too is a balance that I strive for in my writing.

When and where will this book be available?

I thought that you would never ask. Just kidding. The scheduled release date to the public is Friday, May 31, 2019. At that time you will find my book available through most major outlets including Amazon (Kindle and print), Barnes & Noble (POD), Apple, etc. You will also find it throughout the United Kingdom, Australia, Europe, and other places abroad.

My primary goal is to help others improve their lives by improving their health. Therefore, I wanted to ensure that as many people as possible have access to the information.

Cross of a Different Kind: Cancer & Christian Spirituality

Cross of a Different Kind, written by Anthony Maranise, dives into the relationship between cancer and Christianity. A “field guide” for those affected by cancer, Cross of a Different Kind was created for those who have cancer, those who know someone affected by cancer and for the survivors of cancer. Each person will find solace in this novel, regardless of what part of the journey you are on and feel a connection of both faith and hope through the inspiring words and reflections. It’s a reminder of the light in the darkness and how God can bring spiritual comfort and acceptance in a time of loss, sadness and grief.

Cross of a Different Kind is a novel based on the ideologies of Christianity, written especially for those experiencing cancer themselves. The book is split into different sections with each part addressing the different stages of cancer that someone may be in.

The author, Anthony Maranise, tells of his battle with childhood cancer and the feelings surrounding his family, relationship with God and what it meant to find hope in some of his darkest hours. Maranise words are raw, honest and inspiring, allowing the reader to develop a sense of trust and gratitude for the words he writes. At times I felt as though I was sitting in a room, listening to him tell his story as it opened up the pathway to reflect on our personal experiences with cancer.

With statistics such as 69% of cancer patients praying for their health regularly, it is clear that Cross of a Different Kind is a novel that will connect with many people who have been touched by cancer. There are many Christianity references, but they are used to inspire hope, clarity and acceptance in a time of great trauma and stress. Cross of a Different Kind talks about how the journey of faith has helped the author and many others against the tough battles brought on by cancer.

So many of us know someone or have even experienced cancer ourselves and will find the feelings and reflections in the novel provide a sense of solace and comfort in the times of great stress and alarm. One of my favourite sentiments was that it is important to grieve and mourn the loss of our loved ones (even if we believe we will meet them again). Another idea the author presents is that those experiencing cancer are soldiers in their own way, battling the sadness, anger and trauma brought on by sickness that steals happiness and joy. This idea instills a sense of comradery and connection with the book, allowing the reader to feel acknowledged and understood in regards to their own personal battles with cancer.

Cross of a Different Kind will bring the reader a sense of spiritual comfort, understanding and information for those who are experiencing the journey that comes with cancer. I would recommend this for all Christians who are suffering from the burdens of cancer- whether it is themselves or their loved ones.

Globes Disease

Globes Disease

Globes Disease by Lance Keeble is an edge of your seat thriller! We follow Jodi and several of her friends as they deal with an affliction affecting all of them. Their small town is under siege by a Vampire, who hunts those with such an affliction and government agencies promising them a cure. This strange mix of individuals must come together if they hope to survive. They will not only have to fight for each other, but fight to keep their humanity in the process.

I did not know what to expect going into this book. The cover art was interesting, as was the title, but once the story got going I was more mystified by what genre this novel fits into. It’s not quite science fiction, even with the disease device. It does not feel paranormal with the vampire and lycanthropy. Even with the suspense/thriller elements thrown in, they alongside with all the other speculative fiction elements do not define the book entirely. For the indiscriminate genre reader, this book is for sure a treat, because it plays with all the familiar conventions found in those respective genres.

From page to page, Keeble’s prose is electric. The characters jump off the page with each thought and action that they conduct. And to some degree, I felt like I knew these characters at one point in my life, because of the breath that Keeble can breathe into them. I was amazed. Some of the names had me scoff, like the characters, Quake and Ano, but as time went on the names kind of went with them and felt natural.

All in all, the pages read very easy and the reader shouldn’t be surprised when they find themselves twenty pages in after a blink. The pacing Keeble maintains is one that I admired, since it lends to the novel’s suspense and thriller architecture. And it is not only that, but the mystery that exists within the early pages of the book, because as the reader you want to know how all these various characters get swept up into this awful mess.

There were some hang ups for me as a reader, mainly along the lines of how many points of view Keeble chose to follow. It makes the chapters very short and it can ready almost choppy at times, since we are jumping from head to head. This flaw is only saved by how well written his characters are.

The final verdict is this: if you are looking for an interesting and pulse-pounding read than I would recommend this book. If you are searching for a book that defies genre convention and definition than this is the book you are looking for. If you desire a book with a fun case of characters bound in a common mission and goal, when the world is so divided, then this is the book for you. If any of those reasons apply to you then I would very much recommend this book.

Review: City Under the Moon

cutm 4star

City Under the Moon is a well written action adventure novel, but that’s not surprising considering who the author is. Hugh Sterbakov was nominated for an Emmy for his work on Robot Chicken: Star Wars and Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III. He also co-created the Freshman comic books with Seth Green and also wrote Hell & Back which is a stop-motion feature film. Sprinkle in an MFA in screenwriting and you’re guaranteed the writing is going to be rock solid. Enough about Hugh, let’s focus on his book. City Under the Moon takes an outbreak approach to the werewolf story which, I think, is a semi original plot. The werewolf plague is spreading through Manhattan on New Year’s Eve eventually getting the attention of the FBI, the military, and the President.  In the beginning it starts with one or two cases of werewolf attacks, but that quickly multiplies. The military is deployed to Manhattan to, at first, evacuate civilians, but that quickly devolves into a quarantine of the island where the military is battling huge waves of zombies… I mean werewolves. An interesting idea that comes along with the werewolf outbreak is the fact that werewolves only change when the moon is out. So through the story there are these times during the day when people have time to prepare, sort of like the calm before the storm. But during these times there are people walking around among them that may have been bitten by a werewolf, don’t know about it, forgot about, or are trying to hide it, and when the moon comes  they change into werewolves right next to their loved ones. So it’s like a disease that is only deadly when the moon is out and makes everyone suspicious of each other during the day. Although the story takes on a scientific pretext, the origin of the werewolf outbreak comes straight from werewolf lore and is resolved according to those rules. At one point the characters have to travel to Transylvania to find the werewolf’s lair (the scene does not disappoint). The scene stands in stark contrast to the rest of the book as it seems like it’s pulled from an old Dracula novel. The last half of the book is a race against the clock to take out the werewolf leader before Manhattan is overrun and the wolf plague spreads beyond the island. There are several characters in the book, but I consider Brianna Tildascow and Lon to be the two main characters. These characters have well defined motivations and well developed character traits.  Tildascow is an FBI agent that is part of a secret government program to create super soldiers (which pretty much means she kicks ass), she has some abandonment issues that leads to promiscuity and a need to throw herself into her work. And Lon who is your typical anti-social, self-aggrandizing, misanthropic nerd (I’m pretty sure there ‘typical’…right) who happens to be the world’s foremost authority on the occult, specifically werewolves. There is rarely a dull moment in the novel where you’re not learning about the interesting characters, learning about the werewolf disease, learning about werewolf lore, or where werewolves are either killing or being killed. Now to discuss what I didn’t like about the book….. Well that’s enough about that. LOL. Ok, gun to the Hungry Monsters head, there were a few things that didn’t digest well, but City Under the Moon is a non-stop action packed thrill ride with very few missteps.
