Chasing the Blue Sky

Chasing the Blue Sky by [Lowrey, Will]

This is a powerful book that kept me enraptured from the start. This poignant tale gives us a dogs-eye-view of a journey through a sometimes happy and often difficult life. From the sadness of leaving his mom as a young puppy, traveling through various homes, finding a loving home and losing it. The reader must experience great sadness and pain against animals who are defenseless and abandoned. If you are an animal lover this story will pull at your heartstrings. This is such a brilliant perspective encourages advocacy for animals. If you don’t shed a few tears while reading this, you must be asleep!

The writing is easy to read but not juvenile, as you might imagine with the perspective of a dog. The innocence of it is heart-wrenching at times, as if from the eyes of a child. I love all the descriptions and explanations for the dogs’ responses along with the actual dialogue between the animals. This was so endearing. The author masterfully created Toby’s world through his innocent observations that were without all the hyper analysis often accompanying descriptions of human emotions. Although the animals display innocence, they certainly are not dumb, on the contrary, there is so much intuition there that anyone who is bonded with a pet can understand. I love the relationships and bonds formed between animals as well.

This story paints a sad picture of shelter life. This is a great book if one is looking to inspire shelter adoptions, which may have been the authors intent. The picture painted in this novel is not pretty and It certainly created a great sense of compassion in me and interest in adopting an animal from a shelter in the future. This book is deeply penetrating and thoughtful. The writing is beautiful, full of innocence but also depth. This is a quick and impactful read that should be kept on hand for anyone wanting to promote shelter adoptions!

Hair Loss: Options for Restoration & Reversal

Hair Loss: Options for Restoration & Reversal by [Gomez, Gustavo J.]

For anyone who suffers from hair loss, the topic can be one of immense frustration and aggravation. Not necessarily because of the hair loss itself, but because of all the conflicting information found on the topic. Any information coming from a seller or manufacturer of a particular hair loss treatment methods will likely be biased so as to pull in additional paying customers, and even worse than that, much of that information is often either outdated or just plain false.

Sifting through all the misinformation can seem like a daunting task, but when a book like Hair Loss: Options for Restoration & Reversal by Gustavo J. Gomez, Ph.D. comes along everything seems quite a bit clearer. And the best part is, there does not seem to be any angle in its composition or style other than to give as much information on the topic as possible, in as organized a way as possible.

Gomez’ book feels like a scientific study written for the non-scientist and, in fact, it is a peer reviewed work like those found in scientific journals. The author outlines just about every aspect of hair loss that is available to the field of hair loss treatment, and he does so in a way that just about anyone can easily understand.

Starting his book with detailed information about the way hair grows on an anatomical and physiological level, Gomez helps his readers get a feel for the underlying causes of hair loss, so they are better equipped to understand what the various treatment paths discussed later in the book attempt to address. Identification and classification of different types and stages of hair loss, in both men and women, is then discussed at length, before a comprehensive breakdown of all the known causes of hair loss. Once the causes for hair loss are understood, the reader gets to see how and why various treatments have been used throughout the history and what the most popular approaches are today.

The quality of work that went into Hair Loss: Options for Restoration & Reversal by Gustavo J. Gomez, Ph.D. and published by Halo Publishing International of San Antonio, speaks for itself. Hair Loss is neither a light read nor a quick one, but it easily accessible by all. Gomez produced a work that provides pretty much everything a person would need to know about the subject of hair loss, and that is partially why it has won so many impressive awards.

Imaginative Creation

Kate Robinson & Joe DiBuduo Author Interview

Kate Robinson & Joe DiBuduo Author Interview

The Contest and Other Stories is a collection of inspiring stories that got me to think and reflect. What was the inspiration behind this collection?

JD: I originally wanted to create a coffee table art book with all paintings connected to a framing story.

KR: Around 2007 or 2008, Joe started bringing these quirky short stories inspired by paintings to the critique group in Prescott, Arizona that we both belonged to.

In February 2011, he shared his draft and invited me to assist with the project as a co-author. We continued to work on polishing the stories and the connecting novella together. In our bios, we say that he has the vivid imagination and I have the word-whacking polish, but the truth is, we both contributed to the imaginative creation and to the nuts and bolts polishing and editing. We multiplied our mind-power by working together!

Joe DiBuduo

Joe DiBuduo

What were some themes you find yourself exploring in your short stories?

JD: The relationships artists have with drinking, higher consciousness, and insanity.

KR: As Joe says, some of the stories explore the artists’ lives directly in the genres of magical realism, dark fantasy, horror, the paranormal, and alternate history, or as a fabulous motif. The other stories were developed using a painting as a prompt, but have no relation to the artist or their work. Those stories explore life challenges and transitions such as birth, death, falling in love, relationships, family life, and work, also through the medium of various fantasy genres. The connecting novella explores the archetypal overbearing father who insists that his only son follow in his footsteps, while the son rebels to make his unique contribution to arts and literature.

What is the collaboration like between the two of you?

JD: Long distance.

KR: By the time Joe and I started working together on this project, he lived in Arizona and I had landed in California. So we shared thoughts and drafts for The Contest and Other Stories via email.

Will you be putting together another collection of short stories?

JD: We’ve been working on solo projects lately. I completed a connected short story collection in 2016 titled Story Time Karaoke @ The Chicagoua Cafe.

KR: I’ve been working on stories inspired by dreams and a novella created entirely from a series of dreams, with a working title of Loop: Life is But a Dream.

As for other joint projects, Joe and I just published a humorous dystopian sci-fi novelette, Space Race: Robot Rebellion in the Future Wild West (Tootie-Do Press, 2018). We also have a YA story, Thirteen, published in an anthology called 31 Nights of Halloween (Rainstorm Press, 2011). Neither of these stories fit the theme of The Contest, so we searched for other alternatives for publication.

Emotionally Salient

Patrick Barnes Author Interview

Patrick Barnes Author Interview

The Audric Experiment follows Pierre through an ideal society that quickly has it’s facade smashed leaving Pierre to come to terms with the change. What was the inspiration for the setup to this thrilling novel?

I remember wondering when I was younger about serotonin raising drugs and whether or not it would be possible to somehow inject serotonin into a person’s brain. It was an interesting question to me not just for it’s corrective effects on depression but for the moral and theological questions it raised. This led me to start thinking about dreams and God and if it ever became possible to regulate mood in such a way whether or not the world would go along with it. The purpose of The Audric Experiment was not to answer these questions but rather to bring some hope and intrigue along with them. I needed a story to house this content and that was the inspiration.

Pierre is an interesting character that changes is some big ways throughout the book. What were some driving ideals behind his character?

I wanted Pierre to be a high achiever two reasons. One, was so that I could imbue him with emotion and decency and create someone who is extremely likeable and compelling. Two, it gave him further to fall when the you-know-what hits the fan. What Pierre finds important in life gave me room to experiment with some themes that were personal to me, and I knew that changing those values would be emotionally salient for the reader.

I really enjoyed the world building and backdrop to this story. How did you set about creating the world for your characters to inhabit?

A lot of aspects of the world the characters inhabit surprised me. Because a lot of the details I came up with while I was writing. I thought about what an ideal future would look like, things I that would raise the quality of life, and more importantly, things that connected with criticisms I had always had about the world in general. For instance, Pierre goes to school mainly to learn about his future profession — a change I had always wanted to see instituted when I was in school.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I’m writing a young adult murder mystery. It will be available in a year.

The Audric Experiment by [Barnes, Patrick]Can we create a world with no depression?

In 2328 England, they did just that. They call their society Audric – a place where there is no depression because of cybernetics, and where bad decisions are met with a bracelet-shock and a mind-altering dream.

Pierre Morena, the only seventeen year old who has never been shocked by his bracelet, wakes up in an infirmary with no memory of why. It seems a Christian group, permitted by the Audric government, took an interest in him, and the Audric Earnings Authority may want him dead. What follows is his quest to survive, befriending a beautiful mysterious girl who possesses some of the answers he needs, and uncovering secrets that are as close to him as his own family. But before Pierre leaves the infirmary, he may have to cut a secret deal with Audric because Pierre is about to have his first bracelet-shock.

Filled with twists, philosophy, and a story that is as engaging as it is thought provoking, The Audric Experiment will have you reading deep into the night to find out what will happen to the only seventeen year old who everyone thinks has never been shocked by his bracelet.

Universal Truths

Debjeet Mukherjee Author Interview

Debjeet Mukherjee Author Interview

Voyages is a collection of poetry that inspires reflection while also helping readers grasp a deeper meaning of poetry. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Voyages was my way of showing to the world how I perceive the everyday things that go unnoticed. My philosophy coupled with my thoughts in order to point out some universal truths about human nature. The collection is almost like a guide which will take anyone through their teenage years and relive their memories.

What is a theme you find yourself drawn to when writing?

I believe in the abundant goodness that lies in every person. Luck always guides you to be someone greater than yourself. The infinite energy of the cosmos brings balance and harmony to our thoughts, if we allow them to. Every day promises new opportunities which help us move higher and these are the themes I deal with. My writings have inspiration and love.

One of my favorite poems from the collection is ‘Prayers Alive in Hope’. What is your favorite poem from the collection?

Wow! Thanks. “Prayers Alive in Hope” is indeed one of my best poems. My favorite poem would be “Heavens Face”. It was written when I was 15 years old after reading Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist”.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

The next book will be VOYAGES Volume II – A Collection of Short Stories available end 2019/early 2020. I occasionally release small short story booklets and one such has already been published titled “A Rural Coincidence” which is available on Amazon. The next short story booklet will be released on Mother’s Day titled “The Farewell”.

VOYAGES Volume I : A Collection of Poetry by [Debjeet Mukherjee]

Voyages Volume I is a collection of poems written to break the notion that poetry is an art comprehensible only by the elite. Understanding good poetry becomes easy when there is a guide to help understand all those complicated words and lines. Keeping in mind the feelings of the reader, a small quotation has been provided at the end of each poem, carrying a message of what the preceding lines were all about. This style of writing has been chosen as most of the time we fail to understand that poetry is very much a part of our life.

Whether it be sharing good wishes everyday on social media or going through some lovely quotations to uplift our moods, life is just one big book of poetry that we refuse to understand in popular culture. Just like a ship embarks on a voyage, searching and exploring new continents through vast reaches of the ocean; our life too embarks on a journey of adventures which are best described in poetry. I believe this collection would be able to help readers appreciate poetry as a whole and live up to every possible expectation.
