Love and Human Desire

Thomas Duffy Author Interview

Thomas Duffy Author Interview

One Love is an emotional novel that explores the different lives of people struggling with their own challenges in life. Why was this an important book for you to write?

This is the book I identify with most of all the books I have written. It is a book that enables me to share my life experiences with others and, hopefully, shows people the pain and passion in life as well as the complexity of love and human desire. I needed to tell this story for my own personal reasons as well. I believe the family element of the story is also very strong and easy to relate to.

I enjoyed the truth behind many of your characters and how I could relate to them. Is there anything you took from your own life and put into this story?

Yes. The book is semi-autobiographical. There are real people behind all the central characters. I, of course, am Timothy. I met someone many years back, almost 20 years ago, who I fell instantly in love with. All the prior people I had met just didn’t matter after I met this girl. She’s called Melody in the book. I imagined the consequences of meeting her later in life and starting anew despite the fact that we’ve both moved on. Of course, I moved on not by choice but because of rejection. All the main characters in the book have identical counterparts in real life.

This book is filled with a cast of interesting characters. If Hollywood came knocking, who would you cast as the leads in the movie?

Good question. I was thinking Oscar Isaac and Reese Witherspoon initially. Reese Witherspoon, definitely. She has the charm and charisma that Melody would need to have as an on-screen character. Maybe Giovanni Ribisi instead of Oscar Isaac, though, because Reese and Giovanni are closer in age. For Cindy, Carey Mulligan for sure. Cindy is the love of Timothy’s life and Mulligan would capture the essence of Cindy to a tee. I would want Vince Vaughn to play Louie if possible.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I put my sci-fi series, “The Separation” books on hold temporarily to work on a new book for my Truly Moving Book series which “One Love” is a part of. The new book is going to be my best yet! It’s due later this year.

You’re A Survivor

Suzetta Perkins Author Interview

Two Down: The Inconvenient Truth follows a tangled mess of classified government secrets and the trials and tribulations of military relationships. What was the inspiration behind this book?

As a suspense author, I’m always looking for stories that are different but timely. With two husbands and other family members, who were in the Army and Air Force, I had a birds-eye view of some of the goings on of the military. As well, I worked for both Boeing and Martin Marietta (which is now Lockheed Martin) working with spacecraft engineers and the Pershing missile system during the cold war. I was intrigued by the Oliver North story, which was borne out in my first novel, Behind the Veil.

I thought that Persenia’s character draws on the isolation that a military wife might feel. How were you able to capture the life of a military spouse?

That’s an easy question. I was a military spouse, and believe me I understood Persenia’s predicament well.

There is a vast emotional range in this book from jealousy, revenge, to anger. What were some themes you wanted to explore in this book?

The major theme I wanted to convey was that life is complicated. We have are ups and downs. Marriage is work. However, when we’re thrown a sharp curve and no matter the obstacles that are thrown at you, you can come out victorious. You’re a survivor.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I’ve since released Free to Love, which is a sequel to one of my earlier novels, Betrayed. What’s Love Got to Do With It, will be released in either November or December of this year. It’s the sequel to Silver Bullets, that looks at women over fifty, who’re trying to get their sexy back. I’m also working on the sequel to Two Down: The Inconvenient Truth, as my readers, especially the book clubs that I’ve visited, have demanded. They want to know what will become of Persenia and her new love interest, Remy. Some speculate that she will stay with Reggie. For sure there will be some consequences for Reggie’s involvement with the General he was having an affair with, but will also see that Persenia will have to face some consequences of her own. However, while everyone will want to know what happens with Reggie and Persenia, ISIS remains a threat.

George’s Pursuit Across the Perilous Ocean

Follow George after he makes the decision to become his own boss running a small boat. Follow him through the tumultuous journey that leads him to eventually hand over reigns of a successful fleet of liners. We get to see the change in his mindset from worker to supervisor and finally, owner. It took strength, wisdom, knowledge and lots of other things. This is the story of a small business growing into a conglomerate, from a toddler to a fully legal human being.

According to research, only about half of the business started will still stand strong in five years time. This is quite sad for a world where entrepreneurship is highly encouraged. This book is meant to decrease this percentage. One will learn to grow their business from a period of feast and famine to a period where the business comfortably stands on its own, where the welfare and life of the business are not threatened by regular/normal business occurrences. Like a windfall of clients for example.

According to Ray Moore, one should not wait until the growth occurs. They should anticipate it. To successfully go through these growth moments, one requires a vision. They must also keep the business in balance. That is time, team, delivery and money. They must all be applied in appropriate proportions. One must set out the stall for growth. Managing the mindset is the final condition.

This is a short book, that means that the information is presented in a compact package. The whole book is presented as a metaphor. This makes the book highly appealing. It is useful even for those who do not like or have the time to read. It is sober advice from an experienced person. It is advice that actually makes a lot of sense. The steps and tips are easy to follow and understand. One thing that readers will definitely appreciate is that the author does not use complicated business words. He shows the reader how to manage a business without confusing them with difficult economic jargon.

The author outlines the common mistakes entrepreneurs make. He shows what happens to the business after the mistakes are made. He then turns around and outlines the proper way to handle such turning points so that fatal mistakes are not made.

This is a fantastic business guide that provides an easy to understand road-map for getting from a small flailing venture to a successful business. Regardless of the goal, it can be achieved by following these simple directions. Five stars out of five for this crash course in entrepreneurship.

Hard Work and Sacrifice

Kenechukwu Obi Author Interview

Kenechukwu Obi Author Interview

End it by the Gun follows charismatic and determined Beck who’s eagerness to get a top book deal and screen play ruins his life. What was the inspiration that helped you write the setup to this thrilling novel?

It’s simple! Sometimes the very things we go for end up being our source of worries, misery and destruction.

The first half of the book is characterized by Beck’s tumultuous relationships. What were some obstacles that you felt were important to developing his character?

The major obstacle is the very nature of being an aspiring writer in a creative industry that has been designed to constantly crush the hopes and aspirations of even very talented writers with no name yet. Lots of gate-keepers available to remind you how you don’t have ‘what the market wants right now’. You put in all the hard work and sacrifice into your craft, on and on, without a slight guarantee that you will ever become successful.

Beck ultimately finds success with one of his books that has a science versus nature theme which turns political. Being a writer writing about a writer, did put anything from your own life into this book?

Some of Beck’s struggles and experiences were informed to some extent by my own personal experiences as a writer.

What is the next novel that you are writing and when will it be available?

I currently have two manuscripts that I have finished working on. The first one is TASTE FOR CHANGE and the second one I just renamed and its new title is WHERE IS CASSANDRA?
I am looking to have at least one of these novels published in 2019.

American River: Tributaries

American River: Tributaries: Book One of the American River Trilogy by [O’Connor, Mallory M.]Second chances are not easy to come by, but when they roll around, you grab them and hold on for dear life. No family quite knows the truth of this old adage as well as the McPhalan clan. Kate, Alex, and their mother, Marian, share a bond that unites them in more ways than one. All three women have had a relationship with Carl, and all three of them have found ways to discover love once more. When Kate decides to breathe new life into Mockingbird Valley Ranch, the home in which they all lived as a young family, mother and both daughters are presented with an amazing and unforeseen opportunity to renew themselves and their relationships with one another as adults.

Mallory M. O’Connor’s American River Trilogy focuses on several different storylines surrounding the McPhalan family. These parallel plots play nicely against one another as the book progresses. Readers are treated to thorough descriptions of Kate and Alex’s backgrounds as well as a clear look at Marian’s history. O’Connor includes a lengthy list of secondary characters with their own storylines and this, at times, can be a little difficult to follow.

Set in the 1970s, O’Connor masterfully integrates mentions of now historic events alongside the characters’ numerous dilemmas. She covers everything from the moon landing to the increasing focus on feminism. Each of the events and historical aspects gives the book a richer and more polished feel.

American River Trilogy touches on a variety of difficult topics including post-traumatic stress disorder and interracial relationships. O’Connor deals with each of these highly-charged topics with style and grace. Her characters are genuine and leave readers rooting for them every step of the way.

Alex’s particular story line is tragic and likely the most down-to-earth of any of the characters. The trauma of her past and the way it impacts her present life is a striking commentary on an all-too-common facet of the lives of many. O’Connor’s slow reveal of Alex’s damaged childhood is effective and powerful. As much as I found Carl’s inclination to move through the women in the McPhalan family to be somewhat disgusting in retrospect, I saw a whole new side of him when he came to Alex’s aid in her time of need.

O’Connor’s writing is, what I would consider, specialized. There exists a specific audience for this particular piece. Centered around the arts and focusing primarily on the world of music, there is a plethora of discipline-specific terms and ideas within American River Trilogy. I did not find myself able to relate easily to many of Kate and Alex’s experiences.

Readers who seek historical accuracy intermingled with their drama will appreciate O’Connor’s particular style. Classically-trained musicians and those who enjoy reading fiction with a peppering of music-specific terms will find American River Trilogy the perfect read.

A Willing Heart

Lily Tanzer Author Interview

Travels with the Doggie Lama shows the deep relationship that can develop between a dog and their owner. Why was this an important biography for you to write?

Keisha (The Doggie Lama) was my companion through some very important changes in my life (ending a long-term relationship, moving across the country, getting married, having a child, exploring spirituality on a deeper level). In the years after she was gone I would often remark to others that she taught me more about being an energetic being than anything I had formally studied. Her death was both a painful and a mystical experience and I found that when I would talk about her passing with others, it would often spark a long conversation about how difficult losing a pet can be. The loss of a being that holds such unconditional love for us is traumatic and difficult to grieve. “It’s just a dog” some might say, yet if anyone has ever connected deeply with an animal, the loss of that relationship can be incredibly painful.

In writing Travels with the Doggie Lama, I wanted to share the sheer entertainment that such a vibrant personality brought to my world but more so the subtle, life-changing connection that healed my heart and instructed, in some unconventional ways, the art of unconditional love.

I love the title of this book, how did you settle on the title?

Her nickname, “The Doggie Lama,” emerged during my study of yoga, partially as a term of endearment with my husband and I (referencing her constant assistance with meditations in the house) but also spoke to the lessons I was learning from her essence and her connection to Source energy (as any animal will do as they are so closely connected to nature and our true state). She and I physically traveled quite a bit during her life (including several cross-country moves) but we also shared internal travels together: changing and growing through life, exploring the energetic aspect of our existence, and ultimately discovering deep, unconditional love.

Memoirs cause one to reflect on their life in different ways. Is there something that you have a different perspective on now that you wrote this book?

At one point in the book I describe my realizations about what I had learned from an impetuous, loving dog. “We didn’t travel to the Himalayas to sit at the feet of a wise guru, seeking enlightenment. We sat on the floor of the spare bedroom beside one another, breathing in and out. The vast universe was right there behind closed eyes, an open mind, and a willing heart… No one would ever make a movie out of our journey; these were just the things of everyday life, the substance of the physical universe. But our connection had been an epic tale, in my opinion.”

In writing about the events of those fourteen years with Keisha I came to realize at a deeper level that it’s the everyday events, the small and seemingly mundane exchanges that create the fabric of our lives (not the big, momentous events we often seek out). Everyday life can be funny, exasperating, touching, and boring, but when reviewed through a larger lens, we can see the beauty and meaning behind the totality of those events.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

While I plan to write a sequel to Travels with the Doggie Lama, I am currently working on a fanciful trilogy showcasing the adventures of one of my current dogs, Darci (a Pekingese/Maltese mix). Her secret life as a WWII tank commander was exposed a few years back and details have emerged about her exploits in the European theater during the dark days of that global conflict. Her military prowess and rivalry with Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, from the sands of North Africa to the beaches of France, are detailed in these photo books. We plan an initial release in late 2018.

Life in the middle of a big city can be scary. Lily, a young professional living alone in Houston during the mid-1980s, experiences a frightening brush with a near-home invasion. The disturbing episode is the impetus to seek out a home security system: a dog. Fear pushes Lily to purchase her new companion without thinking through the details and she finds the new addition to her life just as unsettling.

Financial struggles, professional challenges, romantic wounds and the trials of being twenty-something all share the tiny apartment with Lily and her new puppy, Keisha. The carefree, adventure-seeking whims of Keisha are at odds with the order-loving, financially challenged Lily.

And yet the irascible dog may be just what the doctor ordered. Once Keisha trots across the threshold, where weeks before the faceless intruder had sought to gain entry, Lily’s life opens up in new, at times exasperating, ways and the adventures begin.

Lily and Keisha both push the boundaries of what’s expected of them and venture out to new venues and new experiences, causing Lily to understand that things are not always what they seem. As Lily begins a deeper exploration into her spiritual life she is shocked to discover Keisha’s talents may extend beyond her garbage loving, squirrel-chasing pursuits.

Join this pair on their journeys: external and internal, humorous and touching. Laugh with Keisha’s flagrant disregard for the law and social convention. Cry with Lily’s struggles. Dip into another level of love and connection and explore the non-spoken bond of soulmates.

It doesn’t matter if you are a life-long dog lover, or someone who has never had a pet; this story will touch your heart because it speaks of the transcendent power of love to bring true joy into our lives–whether we happened to be born with two legs or four.

Essential Oils, Teas, and Self Care

Essential Oils, Teas, & Self Care by [Hunt , Deborah , Hunt , Meaghan ]

The use of essential oils and herbal teas has increased over time as they are beneficial to the body. This book explores most of the common essential oils, herbal teas, spices and herbs that are widely used.

I loved the arrangement of the content in the book; it is commendable as the topics covered were listed in an orderly manner. The first chapter tackles herbal teas. Here, the authors list different types of herbal teas, the infusion, decoction, and precautions. The authors clearly describe their uses with a step by step guide which helps beginners understand how it works. Some of the herbal teas mentioned include Lemon Balm, Red Raspberry Leaf, Chamomile, Spearmint, Holy Basil, and lavender.

This book reads like a well-written health journal. It has every amazing thing you would want when reading about natural remedies to boost your health or treat minor ailments like the flu.

I was awed from the first page, as the authors go into detail, even giving the scientific names of the herbs mentioned. I particularly loved how the uses for the natural herbs and spices were listed. Nothing complex; the language is simple and helps ensure that you do not mess up when mixing your brew.

The addition of the images in the book was a thoughtful move by the authors. When reading about a plant or herb you perhaps have never heard of, you may not easily picture its size or how it looks. Having the images on the side enabled me visualize the herbs, and in that way, get to know them more intimately.

I feel like this book is a search engine for essential oils and herbal teas; it had everything I needed and was easy to lookup and did an amazing job with the explanation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Essential Oils, Teas, and Self Care as I’m now able to differentiate herbs and know what to use and when. Self-care is important and the authors ensures that the reader understands that throughout the book.

Who knew essential oils were this beneficial? From aromatherapy to skin care, hair conditioning, reducing inflammation, treating acne, relaxation, reducing stress, improving circulation, regulating menstrual cramps, and much more. I went from knowing almost nothing about this topic to, dare I say, a semi-pro in this field.

At the start of the book the authors remind the reader to check with their health care providers to consult on safety and caution of the products. This is a great resource as a lookup guide for experts in the field, or as a starting point for people who have heard of the benefits of natural remedies and want to start exploring.

Six Years Black Trailer

Take a breath. Now close your eyes. Imagine you are engulf in darkness. Your front door opens but you never know who walked in. You hide under your bed, then a voice on the phone says four frightening words. “Do you have her?”

Syble Green first home was her sanctuary. Her mom new career advancement made them move to the city. To heal the family woes the mother surprises her husband who is equally as hurt by the move with a trip to an art exhibit. After the lovely evening, they drive home. A car collision occurs. That day Syble lost more than one girl should.

Many years later now living a new life, one without sight. Her mother eventually puts a malicious man behind bars. Before the trial, she received threatening messages stating what will happen if she continued.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you life is manageable or I’m accustom to being blind. There is no fabric of lies woven in that statement.
